Layout

and
Design
Why Layout?
• Look visually pleasing
• Communicate important news
• Establishes unique identity
• Avoids monotony
• Gives personality to newspaper
• Attracts readers
Ways of layout: Horizontal Layout
• More popular
• Long news look less forbidding
Ways of layout: Vertical Layout
• Deeper vertical stem

• Highights length of stories

• Generally used on editorial pages to give it
seriousness
Ways of Layout:Z Pattern Layout
• good for simple
designs
• with a few key
elements that need to
be seen
• In sync with the habit
of reader
Modular Layout
• Stories are arranged in modules
• Stories of similar type are grouped together into
separate units or modules
• A module can have a single story also
• Each page divided into many modules
• Often each module enclosed in a box or lot of
white space left around
• Each module can hold one, two or more
number of stories
• Benefit –
a. can fit into any style of make up , so it is easy
to implement
b. easy to change stories inside it
c. Use of white space around makes it more
attractive
• Modules rectangular or square blocks
• Bring order to the page making it look neat
Mix of horizontal and vertical
• To void dullness of all stories either horizontal
or vertical
• Mix to give the page variety and contrast
What is layout and page make -up
• Includes page structure
• Placement of photos, graphics , text
• Size, shape, format , place of headlines, sub
heads etc.
• Design means ‘whole structure’
• Make- up means ‘making page of newspaper’
• Layout means ‘planning a format for
designing a newspaper page’
Bus Westley said,
“Make-up is largely a matter
of placement of headlines and art”.
• Concepts changed over time-
--- more cartoons, pictures & colors
--- white space is important element
--- length of news Vs. breadth of news ( now)
--- Maximum no. of important news on Page 1
Vs. only few that are most important ( now)
--- fewer and wider columns
--- Indexes of contents on Page 1
CONSIDERATIONS
Important factors
• Less time and more pages
• Important role in tracking news of own choice
• Giving variety while maintaining uniqueness
• Same structure of page with different settings
of elements daily
• How to highlight the news that needs to be
highlighted
• Design the newspaper page with a ‘balance’
PRINCIPLES OF DESGNING PAGES
Principles: Creating focus point
Principles: BALANCE
• Visual weight of various elements of a page
• Top/bottom/right/left – heavy or light
• Distribution of pics ,text , graphics in a pleasant
way
• Formal balance includes placing equal-sized
objects on either side of the page like mirror
image of each other
• Usually used informal balance – not mirror
image but equilibirium
Principle: CONTRAST
• Use of two or more elements dramatically
different from each other
• Through size, shape,shade,color
• Lighter HL in contrast with Bold HL
• Bigger picture contrasts smaller picture
• Black contrasts White
• Used to display personalities of papers
• Variety of headline fonts
• Underlined HL
• Some HL capitalized and other not
• Use of arrows
• Use of bold face body type
• Shapes of stories + lines & boxes
• Contrast colors on both sides
• Main HL in caps and rest in small and italics etc.
Principles: PROPORTION
• Comparative relationships in terms of
length,size,shape etc.
• Square shape might be dull and uninteresting
Vs. unequal proportions more attractive
• So, rectangle preffered
• Most common proportions- 2:3 and 3:5
Principles: UNITY
• Individual elements must relate to each other
and to the total design
• Might be done by enclosing things in border ,
grouping elements
• Weigh the elements visually and place them in
a satisfactory arrangement
• Communication through page as one unit
Principles: RHYTHM/ MOTION
• Produced by regular repetition of similar lines,
shapes and tones or colors
• Column grids form repeating pattern on pages
• Readers’ eye moves smoothly over the page
• But complete rhythm in designs should be
broken to avoid monotony
• Apply rhythm in patterns , not in designing or
putting of elements
Principles: HARMONY
• Elements should not be fighting with each other
• All elements should go with each other in
terms of tone , shape and design characteristic
• Shape harmony, typographical harmony
• Individual characters, pictures, signs ,
punctuation of same style
• Idea: select one family of font and go with its
different sizes and styles for variation
More ways of layout : Dominant Image
• Dominant art gives page focus
• Gives readers clue where to look first
• Variety can be put with other art work of
different shapes and sizes
• Keep in mind that attention should be drawn
on the content and not the design
• A means of highlighting the news to be
highlighted
Do’s and Don’ts
• Bumping Heads
- Placing two heads side by side
- Different type size to recognize both news
- Use gutter rules (lines in the space b/w
stories)
• Raw Wraps
- If text wraps into other column without being
under the HL > may get lost
- Wrap around picture to make readers follow it
Bumping heads
Raw wrap
Do’s and Don’ts
• Gray Space –
- Avoid using only gray text /no picture/no pull
quote- it is dull and destroys balance
• White Space-
- Best for making maximum in narrower papers
- Grouping related stories and separate unrelated
stories
- Signals that the contents that are packaged are
special and not normal news stories
Do’s and Don’ts
- Put it outside the module
- Don’t trap it by related text, pics & graphics
- Stylebook also, at times, describe the White Space
to be used
• Hierarchy of HL-
- Correct size of type to use for HL
- Street papers put bigger HLs
- Conveys magnitude of the events
- At times, bigger to smaller size of HL used for
relative importance of the stories
Do’s and Don’ts
• Arranging pictures in packages-
( collection of pics,graphics,story presented in a
module )
-- try to begin story below headline and no gap
should remain
-- can be packaged vertically as well as
horizontally
Do’s and Don’ts
• Use colors wisely-
- To show which stories are related
- To establish paper’s personality
- Use it to make paper interesting and exciting
- Use it to direct readers’ eyes
- Color screens or colored b/g used, instead of
boxes, for short stories- effective
- Color theory important
- At times, color pallets are used
