Proving properties of parallel lines

cut by a transversal
(Corresponding angles of parallel lines cut by a transversal)
Learning Objectives

01 At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
02
03 1. identify the different angle pairs if parallel lines are
04 cut by a transversal,
05 2. prove properties of parallel lines that are cut by a
06
transversal, and
3. relate real-life problems involving parallel lines cut by a

transversal.

04 lines, each at a different point.

If a transversal intersects two parallel lines, then the following angle are congruent.

03
04
05
06

•Corresponding angles: The pair of angles 1 and 5 (also 2 and 6. 3 and 7, and 4 and 8) are
corresponding angles. Angles 1 and 5 are corresponding because each is in the same position (the upper
◀ left-hand corner) in its group of four angles. Also notice that angles 1 and 4. 2 and 3, 5 and 8, and 6 and
7 are across from each other, forming vertical angles, which are also congruent.
01
02 •Alternate interior angles: The pair of angles 3 and 6 (as well as 4 and 5) are alternate interior angles.
These angle pairs are on opposite (alternate) sides of the transversal and are in between (in the interior
03 of) the parallel lines.
04 •Alternate exterior angles: Angles I and 8 (and angles 2 and 7) are called alternate exterior angles.
They are on opposite sides of the transversal, and they are outside the parallel lines.
05
06 •Same-side interior angles: Angles 3 and 5 (and 4 and 6) are on the same side of the transversal and
▶ are in the interior of the parallel lines, so they're called same-side interior angles.

•Same-side exterior angles: Angles 1 and 7 (and 2 and 8) are called same-side exterior angles- they're
on the same side of the transversal, and they're outside the parallel lines.

•Juana's Mango Farm and Parallel Roads
Juana owns a vast mango farm located in Santa Elena, Camarines Norte. To efficiently transport
◀ harvested mangoes from the orchard to the packing shed, she utilizes a network of parallel farm roads.
01 One sunny morning, Juana needs to deliver mangoes to two different locations: a local market and a
processing plant.
02
The farm has two main roads, Road A and Road B, that run parallel to each other, with several side
03
roads intersecting them at various points. These side roads act as transversals, cutting across the parallel
04 main roads.

05 Juana knows that according to the properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal; certain pairs of angles
06 will be congruent.

▶ Challenge:

As Juana plans her delivery route, help her identify all the pairs of congruent angles formed by the
intersection of Road A, Road B, and the side roads (transversals).

Assignment:
Road Construction and Parallel Lines
◀ Situation: Engr. Dela Cruz is designing a new road system in Barangay Kalayaan, Laguna. He wants the
01 main road (Barangay Road) to intersect two smaller roads (Mango Street and Guava Street) at a 90-
degree angle (perpendicular).
02
1. If Engr. Dela Cruz achieves a perfect 90-degree angle where Barangay Road meets Mango
03
Street, what can you say about the angles formed between Barangay Road and Guava Street according
04 to the properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal?

05 2. Explain your answer using the concept of corresponding angles and alternate interior
06 angles.

▶ 3. Engr. Dela Cruz also wants to create a small drainage canal parallel to Barangay Road.
How can the concept of parallel lines help him achieve this?
