What is Micro teaching

 Theprocess which helps to learn to

teach is called Microteaching

1
Microteaching
Dr. Allen and his group evolved concept of Mi-
croteaching in 1963 in Stanford University,
America.
In India, Department of Teacher Education in
NCERT designed a project on Micro teaching along
with University of Baroda in 1975.

2
What is Microteaching?
•Micro teaching is not a teaching but it is a process of
learning to teach, in which
•Small teacher (Student –Teacher) teaches
•small unit of content to the
•small group of students (6-10 number) in a
•small amount of time (5-10 min.) in a
•Simulated condition( Artificial Classroom)
Therefore it is a strategy to train inexperience stu-
dent-teachers for acquiring teaching skills.

3
Microteaching
“Microteaching is a scaled down teaching
encounter in class, size & time.”

D.W.Allen (1966) “Microteaching is defined as a

system of controlled practice, that makes it
possible to concentrate on specified teaching
behavior and to practice teaching under
controlled conditions.”

4
Steps of microteaching

Step I: Orientation about the Particular skill to

be practiced is explained to the Student teacher
in terms of the purpose & components of the
skill with suitable examples.

Step II : Demonstration of the Skill:

The Teacher educator gives the
demonstration of the skill in simulated
conditions to the student teachers

.
5
Step III :Planning Micro lesson by Student
teacher:
The Student teacher plans a Micro lesson plan
on the basis of the demonstrated skill for his/her
practice

Step IV : Teaching by St- tr in a Simulated

Condition
The Student teacher teaches the lesson to a small
group of pupils. His / Her lesson is supervised by
supervisor and peers.

6
Step V : Feedback by the Supervisor:
On the basis of the observation of a lesson, the
supervisor gives feedback to the Student teacher.
By this he reinforces the instances of effective use
of the skill and draws attention to the points
where he needs to do better.

Step VI : Re- plan by the st- tr to do re teach

In the light of the feedback given by the supervisor,
the Student Teacher re-plans the lesson plan in
order to learn the copmponents in more effective
manner in the second trial.

7
Step VII : Re-teach
The revised lesson is practiced by a
student teacher in the simulated conditions

Step VIII : Re feedback

The supervisor observes the re-teach
lesson and gives re-feedback to the Student
teacher with convincing arguments &
reasons .
Step IX : The “ teach - Re-teach” cycle may
be repeated several times till adequate
mastery level is achieved.

8
Microteaching Cycle
Step- I : Micro Lesson Plan (may take 2 hrs/ a
day)
Step-II : Teach 6Min.
Step-III : Feedback Session 6 Min.
Step-IV : Re-plan 12 Min.
Step-V : Re-teach 6 Min.
Step-VI : Re-feedback 6 Min.

Total 36 Min. (Appr.)

Institutions
 Skill of Introducing a Lesson
 Skill of Explaining
 Skill of Stimulus Variation
 Skill of Fluency in Questioning
 Skill of Illustration with Examples
 Skill of Black Board Writing
 Skill of Reinforcement
 Skill of achieving closure

Programme - orientation on Teaching Skills 11
Characteristics of Microteaching
1) Duration of teaching as well as number of
students are less.
2) Content is divided into smaller units.
3) Only one teaching skill is considered at a
time.
4) Provision of immediate feedback.
5) In micro teaching cycle, there is facility of re-
planning, re-teaching and re-evaluation.
6) It puts the teacher under the microscope
7) All the faults of the teacher are observed.
8) The problem of discipline can also be con-
trolled.
12
Feedback in Micro teaching
• Helpful information or criticism that is given to
someone to say what can be done to improve a per-
formance, product etc.
• The success of micro teaching depends on feed-
back.
• It is provided in various forms in case of micro
teaching i e by the supervisor, video-tape, films,
projectors -which are various sources of feedback.

13
Advantages of Microteaching

1. It focuses on sharpening and developing specific teaching

skills and eliminating errors.
2. It enables understanding of behaviours important in
class-room teaching.
3. It increases the confidence of the Student teacher.
4. It is a vehicle of continuous training for both beginners
and for senior teachers.
5. It provides experts supervision and constructive feedback.
6 . Participants learn about their strengths & weakness in
themselves as teachers and Plan strategies for improve-
ment in performance.
