COMPUTER SYSTEM

System
System is a collection of interrelated components that work together
toward a collective goal.
Computer System
This is a collection of interrelated components that work together with
the aim of converting data into information.
Computer system is the combination of hardware , software, user and
data.
COMPONENT OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

• Hardware
Hardware means the physical structure of a computer i.e. the parts that can be
touched. All components attached to computer like keyboard, mouse, monitor,
printer are hardware.
• Software
Software is collection of computer programs, procedures and documentation that
perform some task on computer system. Software includes website, program etc.
COMPONENT OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

• User
A personal who inputs and analyzes data using a computer
• Data
These are raw facts about something, they can be numbers,
letters, or symbols that the computer process into meaningful
information
COMPUTER HARDWARE
COMPUTER HARDWARE

• Computer Hardware are all physical structure of a

computer that can be touched. All components attached
to computer like keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer are
hardware.
COMPUTER HARDWARE CATEGORY

Hardware can be categorized into four broad categories

Input Device
Processing Device
Output Device
Storage Device
Basic Hardware Components of computer System

Data Input Processing Output Information

Storage

STORAGE

INPUT OUPUT

CPU
INPUT DEVICE

Input devices are used to put data and

instruction into a computer. Examples of input
devices include keyboards, mice, scanners,
digital cameras and joysticks.
KEYBOARD

Keyboard made up with push-button switches

which send a signal to the CPU each time you
press them.
TYPES OF KEYS IN A KEYBOARD

• Alphabet keys
• Number keys
• Numeric keys
• Function keys
• Special keys
• Arrow keys
Keyboard layout
MOUSE

• Mouse-is the device used to control the cursor or

pointer on the screen and give commands to the
computer.
MOUSE BUTTON

Left hand Button- Select

Button
Right hand Button- Option
Button
Scroll wheel- Scrolling up
and down
SCANNER

• This is a light sensitive device that helps in copying and

capturing images, photos, and artwork that exist on a
paper and convert it into digital that can be processed
and stored by computer.
JOYSTICK

• looks like car’s stick shift, it controls object on

screen
BAR CODE READER

• electronic device for reading printed bar codes.

OTHER INPUT DEVICE

• Digital camera
• Webcam
• Microphone
OUTPUT DEVICE

• output device are pieces of computer hardware equipment

used to communicate the results of data processing carried
out by an information processing system (computer)
which converts the electronically generated information
into human-readable form. Example Speakers,
Headphones, Screen (Monitor), Printer and projector.
MONITOR

• A computer monitor or a computer display is an

electronic visual display for computers.
PRINTER

• Printer is a peripheral which makes a persistent human

readable representation of graphics or text on paper or
similar physical media. The two most common printer
mechanisms are black and white laser printers used for
common documents, and color inkjet printers which can
produce high quality photograph output
MASS STORAGE DEVICE

 Mass storage refers to the storage of large amounts of data in a

persisting and machine-readable fashion.
 Mass storage device include variety of computer drives such as
magnetic disk drive, magnetic tape drives, magneto-optical disc
drives, optical disc drives, and solid-state drives, drum memory,
floppy disk drives and punched tape. Mass storage includes
devices with removable and non-removable media.
TYPES OF COMPUTER MEMORY

PRIMARY MEMORY SECONDARY MEMORY

RAM PUNCHED TAPE

ROM MAGNETIC TAPE

FLOPPY DISK

OPTICAL DISK

MAGNETIC DISK

SOLID STATE DRIVE(SSD)

VOLATILE AND NON-VOLATILE MEMORY

• Volatile memory is computer memory that requires power to maintain the stored
information i.e. it retains its contents while powered on but when the power is
interrupted the stored data is lost very rapidly or immediately.
Volatile memory has several uses, for example as main memory. In addition Volatile
memory are usually faster than non-volatile memory.
• Non-volatile memory is computer memory that can retrieve stored information even
after having been power cycled (turned off and back on). Examples of non-volatile
memory include read-only memory, and most of mass storage device.
PROCESSING DEVICE

1. Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU)

2. Main Memory (RAM)
3. Control Unit (CU)
PERIPHERAL DEVICES

Peripheral devices are not part of the central core of the

computer. This is the general term for extra/additional devices.
