BRANCH: AIDS SECTION: 2 SUBJECT: SE CAPABILITY MATURITY MODEL INTEGRATION (CMMI) A PROCESS IMPROVEMENT APPROACH INTRODUCTION
• Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)
is a process level improvement training and appraisal program. It helps organizations streamline process improvement and encourage productive, efficient behaviors that decrease risks in software, product, and service development. HISTORY OF CMMI
• CMMI was developed by the Software
Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. It has evolved over time to incorporate best practices from various industries and provide a framework for process improvement. CMMI LEVELS
• CMMI is divided into five maturity levels that represent a path
The organization usually does not provide a stable environment. Success in these organizations depends on the competence and heroics of the people in the organization and not on the use of proven processes. LEVEL 2: MANAGED
• The projects of the organization have ensured
that processes are planned and executed in accordance with policy. Projects employ skilled people who have adequate resources to produce controlled outputs. LEVEL 3: DEFINED
• Processes are well characterized and
understood, and are described in standards, procedures, tools, and methods. The organization's set of standard processes, which is the basis for Level 3, is established and improved over time. LEVEL 4: QUANTITATIVELY MANAGED
• The organization and projects establish
quantitative objectives for quality and process performance and use them as criteria in managing processes. Quantitative data is gathered and analyzed to manage process performance. LEVEL 5: OPTIMIZING
• An organization continually improves its
processes based on a quantitative understanding of its business objectives and performance needs. Processes are continually improved through incremental and innovative improvements. BENEFITS OF CMMI
seeking to improve their processes and achieve higher levels of performance • - It provides a structured path for continuous process improvement and can lead to significant benefits in quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction
