INTRODUCTION
What does it mean?
It refers to the occupation, industry, or
season of catching fish or other sea
animals for nutrition

fishing
ꝍ Fish is a good and cheap source of animal
protein.
ꝍ Apart from fish, fish production also includes
shellfish such as prawns and molluscs.
ꝍ The water source of the fish can be either
seawater or fresh water, such as in rivers and
ponds.

Based on Water bodies:-

Marine fisheries Inland fisheries

Yields are increased by locating large schools of fish in the open All the species in inland fishing can use all the food in the
sea using satellites and echo-sounders pond without competing with each other. This increases the
fish yield from the pond.

India’s marine fishery resources include 7500 km of coastline Fresh water resources include canals, ponds, reservoirs and
and the deep seas rivers.

Popular marine fish varieties include pamphlet, mackerel, tuna, Examples of the inland fishery are Rohus, Grass Craos,
• sardines, and Bombay duck Callas, Mrigals, etc.

As marine fish stocks get further depleted, the demand for more Fish culture is sometimes done in combination with a rice

How is Capture fishing done?
The desired fish is caught from the sea directly and sold in market or stored at home for own
purposes.
How is Culture fishing done?
The main moto in culture fishing is to increase the yield to the maximum. For example, when we harvest
catfish, we first collect female eggs from alive catfish and then artificial insemination is done with
prepared male sperm. This is done in a huge number. The egg are then taken close care of until
fertilization occurs. After about 2 weeks, the hatchlings are brought to the pound and are fed until they
mature into grown fish. They are stored in large tanks, pounds, reservoirs etc. Then the capture the fish
with large nets and are sold directly to the mark or are used for domestic purposes.

Which one is more preferable? Capture or Culture fishing?

Culture fishing is definitely more preferable since it increases the yield and only mature fish
are caught. While in capture fishing, the yield varies and both mature and immature fish get
caught.

Measures
SUSTAINABILITY of Fishing
Sustainable fishing guarantees there will be populations of ocean and
freshwater wildlife for the future. Aquatic environments are home to
countless species of fish and invertebrates, most of which are consumed
as food. (Others are harvested for economic reasons, such as oysters that
produce pearls used in jewelry.) Seafood is respected all over the world,
in many diverse cultures, as an important source of protein and healthy
fats. For thousands of years, people have fished to feed families and
local communities.
