ETHOS OF NURSING

OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lecture students should be able to ;
• Define the following concepts
(i ) Nursing
(ii) Values
(iii) Morals
(iv) Evolution
Describe the difference between values and morals.

INTRODUCTION
• The word “ethos” was derived from the Greek word for
character.

• Nursing profession has been shaped by social ,political ,


cultural , religious and scientific factors.

• The ethos of nursing is concerned with the origin ,evolution,


development and growth of nursing – with the past , present
and future.
Definition
Nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on
the care of individuals , families , and communities so they
may attain ,maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of
life.

• Nursing is the protection , promotion and optimization of


health and abilities , prevention of illness and injury ,
facilitation of healing , alleviation of suffering through the
diagnosis and treatment of response ,and advocacy in the care
of individuals ,families, groups, communities and populations .

others .

• Caring is a feeling of showing care and compassion for the


other people

• It can also be defined as holding or manifesting high principles


for proper conduct.

organism are believed to have developed from earlier forms

importance , worth ,or usefulness of something

judgement of what is important in life .

‘concepts given worth or importance in life and interactions ,
making up a value system .
• Values relate to our identity and we find our values through
specific experiences and from our association with other
people.`
The difference between morals and
values
Introduction

• Morals and values are apart of an individual’s life , they often


detect the behaviour , personality and the way of living for a
particular individual.

• Though many people believe that they are the same and can
be used interchangeably , they mistaken .

• These two terms are related to each other and often correlate
in a person’s life ; however they are different from each other.

• Morals are a set of rules that differentiate the right from the
wrong based on the belief system of society , culture , religion
etc whilst values are a set of rules that are set by an individual
person.

• Morals describe what is right and wrong , whereas values


explain important behaviour and beliefs of a person or group.
Morals are then based on the belief and understanding of
those values.
• Morals and values are concepts very close in meaning and
meant to keep us on the right path while live and interact with
others in a society .
• Morals are codes of conduct that tell us what is right and what
is wrong , and thy mostly come from religion and society .
• Values are internal belief systems held by individuals that
guide their behaviour
• Values are personal and subjective while morals are universal
and objectives
• Values can change while morals remain the same.

Examples of morals

• From the moment that a person is born , they often told that
stealing is bad , being polite is good and being mean is bad .
These are ethics that have already been set for us and we have
already been set for us and we have to conform to them while
growing up.

• Respect , honour , patriotism compassion honest
Different types of values
• A value refers to a person’s principles or standards of behavior
. It is an individual’s judgement of what is important in life .
Examples include honesty , responsibility ,truth , tolerance,
cooperation, solidarity ,peace and respect
Significance of values
Personal value
• These are considered essential on which we build our life and
guide us to relate with other people.
• They are usually a blend of family values and social-cultural
values , together with own individual ones , according to our
experience.

Family values
• These are valued in a family and are considered either good or
bad.
• These derive from fundamental beliefs of the parents ,who
use them to educate their children
• They are basic principles and guidelines of our initial behavior
in society , and are conveyed through our behaviors in the
family , from the simplest to most complex.

Social cultural values

• These are the prevailing values of our society which change


with time, either coincide or not with our family or personal
values.

• They constitute a complex mix of different values , and at


times contradict one another , or pose a dilemna.

Material value

• These values allow us to survive and are related to our basics


needs as human beings , such as food and clothing and
protection from the environment

Spiritual values

• They refer to the importance we give to non –material aspects


in our lives

• They are part of our human needs and allow us to feel fulfilled
.

• They add meaning and foundation to our life ,as do religious


beliefs
Moral values

• The attitude and behaviors that a society considers essential


for coexistence, order and a general well being

Conclusion
• In the nursing profession values and morals act as guidelines
in the nurse performance of her duties .
• They act as standards .
• Morals and values makes a human being to be what he/she is .
• Values are personal whilst morals are universal.
