Punnett Square

Week 3

Punnett Square
Objectives:
Construct and complete a Punnett Square to
find the possible genotypes and phenotypes of
offspring.

Keyword:
Punnett square, Genotype,
Phenotype, Homozygous and
Heterozygous

Pair Work

Think:
• Can you count the number of genes in
your body?
• Do you know that in our body there are
around 30,500 genes?
What is a Punnett Square?
The tool which uses the
combination of genes to predict
the probability of traits showing
up in offspring.

Think-Pair-Share

Draw a diagram to differentiate between:

1) Homozygous and Heterozygous.
2) Phenotype and Genotype.

4 min
You know that I have
Brown eyes
This is a physical characteristic I have.

You can see it when you look at me.

The word PHENOTYPE is used to show

the physical characteristics.
BUT…
Can you know what do I have in my GENES?

My father has brown eyes.

My mother has blue eyes.

So, I have B from my father and b from my mother.

My GENOTYPE is Bb.
So phenotype… Then Genotype…
• Will be the Physical characteristics • Must mean refer to the genes!

we can see

Using a PUNNETT SQUARE
To set up a Punnett square, draw a large
square, and then divide it into 4 equal
sections (also squares). It should look
something like this:
Using a PUNNETT SQUARE
You need 2 parents with known genotype.

Example:

A red flower (genotype Rr) and a white flower

(genotype rr) were crossed.

We will simply write: Rr x rr

Using a PUNNETT SQUARE

Place one of the parents on top, and one on the left.

THE PARENTS’
ALLELES GO ON THE
OUTSIDE OF THE
SQUARE
DROP THE
UPPERCASE LETTERS ON THE
FIRST TOP, INTO EACH
SQUARE
R r

MOVE r Rr rr r
EACH
LETTER
ON THE
SIDE, r Rr rr r
INTO
EACH
SQUARE
Name the
PHENOTYPES Parent 1
of the R r
offspring
