PRAYER AND

FASTING
PS. LARRY ALILURAN
II. WHAT PRAYER IS? THE DEFINITION
• Prayer is the expression of the human
heart in conversation with God.
• Prayer is a two-way communication of
dialogue between two persons who
love each other.
• Prayer is asking and receiving with
God
1. Central Truth About Prayer
a. By prayer, we express friendship with
God. It is much a matter of the heart. True
prayer will give you a deeper love for
prayer and deeper PEACE and JOY in it.
1. Central Truth About Prayer
b. Prayer is very personal. No two people pray
exactly alike. Each one of us shows a UNIQUE
way of prayer. Your style of prayer, the
amount of time you need to pray, and the
words you use.
Example of Great Men of Prayer:
1. Moses – Exodus 17:11
2. Elijah – 1 Kings 18:42
3. Jesus – Luke 22:39
2. Characteristics of Prayer
Christian's prayer is different:
a. It is not a prayer to God who is far away.
b. It is very true although mysterious way.
c. It is sharing in Jesus’ prayer to the Father.
d. The more we are living in the SPIRIT the more
we are effective in PRAYER.
e. The DEPTH of our prayer depends on the
DEPTH of our relationship with the LORD JESUS.
f. It is living in the SPIRIT which makes us fit to
pray fully in the Spirit.
2. Characteristics of Prayer
Christian's prayer is different:
g. We do not know what to pray. To talk to God,
we must first sense His presence and then enter
into it. He is everywhere even if we do not feel His
presence (Ps. 139:7-10). He manifests His presence
in chosen times and places, nevertheless, He is
everywhere when we recognize His presence it
becomes easier to speak with Him in prayers.

“Spend your time in prayer and learn to be a person of prayer.”

3. The Blockage Prayer
a. THE WICKED PRAYER – goes beyond God’s
commandment and promises and ask something
plainly forbidden in Scripture (James 4:3).
b. THE UNFORGIVING PRAYER – denies the very
grounds of prayer that we ourselves have been
forgiven. Nursed grudges kill prayer time.
c. THE CLUELESS PRAYER – find out all you can,
so you can pray with understanding. Paul wanted
his weakness to be taken from him (2 Cor 12:7-9).
d. THE SELFISH PRAYER – our own interests in
view, not God’s glory (Eze. 14:3)
3. The Blockage Prayer
e. THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS PRAYER – secretly
comparing ourselves more favorably than others.
This kind of foolishness bounces off the ceiling
(Luke 18:10-14)
f. THE DOUBTING PRAYER – faithless, doesn’t
really believe a promise.
g. THE WORDLY PRAYER – falseness makes a pretty
speech to impress others listening and also
prayers that don’t go through Heaven.
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
A. NATURALNESS OF PRAYER
1. Don’t pretend. Be honest with yourself before God.
Pray what you really think. Don’t excuse sin, by convincing
yourself it was a moment of weakness.
2. Be Natural. Don’t speak unnaturally. As well as being
Lord and Master, God is also your Father and Friend.
3. Don’t Talk Too Much. Wait patiently in His presence
before you begin to talk. Cultivate His righteousness. Talking
too much shows no belief that God wants to speak. A
conversation has two sides. Prayer is not a lecture.
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
A. NATURALNESS OF PRAYER
4. Pray specifically. When you find a promise, when your
motives are for God’s glory, ask in faith. Make a request for
that which you can believe that GOD WILL ANSWER. He will
do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask and think
according to the power that worketh in us.
5. Pray always. This means always be in prayer
attitude… awareness of God. Prayers don’t have to be too
long. Peter’s three words brought fast results (Mark 14:30;
Luke 18:1; Eph 6:18)
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
A. NATURALNESS OF PRAYER
6. On Your Nose or Your Toes. Position in prayer isn’t
important but should reflect the state of your heart. We are
very common to close our eyes in prayer because this helps
shut out distractions. But you don’t have to close your eyes
while you are alone, always practice not to close your eyes
while praying at your desk, on a field, walking along the road,
or even when driving a car. When you are talking to someone
and need quick such attention or action, prayer is essential.
(Nehemiah 2:4)

B. THE PURPOSE OF PRAYER IN OUR DAILY
LIFE
1. To have instruction from the Living God.
2. To have strength for the day.
3. To have a systematic Bible Study.
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP

C. THE PRAYER RULE
Prayer is asking and receiving. It is talking with
God and making your request known unto Him in
Faith. Our Lord Jesus instruct the believer to ASK,
SEEK, and KNOCK, because there 3 words cover
the whole spectrum of prayer.
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
C. THE PRAYER RULE
• ASKING and RECEIVING – when you know
the will of God regarding a need whether it be
material or spiritual, you can ASK and
RECEIVE it. This is a prayer according to the
revealed will of God (1 John 5:14-15)
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
C. THE PRAYER RULE
• SEEKING and FINDING – when you do not
know the will of God regarding a need whether
it be material or spiritual, then you are to SEEK
His will in prayer concerning this need until you
FIND it. This is a prayer for a knowledge of the
unrevealed will of God in a specific need (Col
3:1, Jer 29:12-13).
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
C. THE PRAYER RULE
• KNOCKING and OPENING – when you know
the will of God and yet you find a closed
door you are to KNOCK and keep on
persevering in prayer until impossible
becomes possible. This is a miracle-working
prayer. (Matt 17:14-21)
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
D. THE PRAYER GUIDELINES
1. THE NECESSITY OF PRAYER. Our Lord
taught us that prayer is not an option that we do
when we “feel like it”, it is a God-given
responsibility. Few of us “find time” to pray. We
must make the time.
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
D. THE PRAYER GUIDELINES
2. THE BIBLE. The prayer and the bible go
hand in hand. Pray as you read the Bible and
meditate on God’s word as you pray. As you read
the Bible, praise God for what he reveals of
himself and pray for strength and wisdom to obey
his commands.
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
D. THE PRAYER GUIDELINES
3. PRAYER LIST. A list of prayer requests
reminds you of specific needs and will keep your
mind from wondering. By recording how God has
answered a request, you will be encouraged to
keep praying. But don’t let this steal your
spontaneity. You are praying to a person not
compiling a list.
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
D. THE PRAYER GUIDELINES
4. PRAYER PARTNER. To help you pray
consistently ask the Lord for a friend with whom
you can share and pray. Meeting regularly
provides mutual encouragement.
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP
YOUR PRAYER LIFE
D. THE PRAYER GUIDELINES
5. DISTRACTION IN PRAYER. Because prayer
is a “spiritual warfare”. Satan/Demons will try to
distract you. Ask God to help you pray regularly and
Jesus will direct you through His Holy Spirit. If you
have trouble in wondering thoughts, the following
are effective to make you alive with God: (ALIVE
PRAYER LINE WITH GOD).
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP

a. Changing your prayer position
b. Praying aloud
c. Consulting a prayer list

G. DIFFERENT KINDS AND TYPES OF PRAYER
In Ephesians 6:18
• Amplified Bible – “Praying with all kinds of
prayer”
• Godspeed translation – “Praying using every
kind of prayer and entreaty and at every
opportunity, pray in the Spirit.”

G. DIFFERENT KINDS AND TYPES OF PRAYER
1. PRAYER OF FAITH – this is a prayer of petition.
The prayer that changes things. The prayer is
always based on God’s word. It never contains “IF”,
it uses faith (Mark 11:24; Matt 21:22, Phil 4:6).
III. GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP

G. DIFFERENT KINDS AND TYPES OF PRAYER
2. PRAYER OF CONSECRATION – this is a prayer of
dedication of our lives for God’s use to go anywhere and do
anything. This is the time to pray. Luke 22:42 and Matthew 26:36-
39 use to express your desire to submit your life to God’s will.
Because we cannot find anything in the Word of God to base what
we are for, we pray “IF IT BE THY WILL”. But when it comes to
salvation and healing, we can find in the Word of God where it is
God’s will to HEAL and SAVE. So, we don’t tack on there “IF IT
BE THY WILL”. Unless you are praying a prayer of consecration
wanting to know God’s will for your life.

Ministering to God. The powerful message, prayer,
praise, and worship shake the kingdom of darkness
and Satan becomes a defeated foe. (Acts 13:1-14;
Luke 24:52)
- Paul and Silas (Acts 16:25-27)
- King Jehosaphat (2 Chron 20:22)

tongues. Edify yourself spiritually. (1 Cor 14:14-15;

and the subject of prayer. There is tremendous
power in this type of prayer. (Acts 4:23-31)

8. INTERCESSORY PRAYER – the prayer of
intercession is a prayer for others. This is the prayer for those in
authority before your pray for anything else. Standing in the gap
between God and people (Spiritual Warfare) standing between
people and the power of darkness (Exo 32:7-19; Ps 106:23; Isa
54:16). Prayer for Jesus who is in authority over the nation. Eze
22:30-31; Dan 10:2-13; Isa 54:16; 2 Chro 7:14; Dan 9; Ezra 9;
Neh 9 are specific principles where God’s people humbled
themselves and intercede for their plans.
