KEY WORDS:
1. FORCE: A push or a pull.
2. MAGNITUDE OF FORCE: Strength of force.
3. CONTACT FORCE: The type of force wherein the object and the agent applying force
must be physically touching. Example – Muscular force, Frictional force, Mechanical force.
4. NON-CONTACT FORCE: The type of force wherein the object and the agent applying
force need not be physically touching. Example – Gravitational force, Electrostatic force,

Define the term
‘FORCE’??

Define force -
 Force is defined as a push or pull acting on an object.

 Forces include gravity, friction, and applied force. Force causes changes in
the speed or direction of motion. Force is a vector quantity(Vectors are
used in science to describe anything that has both a direction and a
magnitude. They are usually drawn as pointed arrows, the length of which
represents the vector's magnitude) because it has both magnitude and
direction. Like other vectors, it can be represented by an arrow.
 Common symbols: F→, F
 SI unit: Newton https://youtu.be/iLB_4Wu2QOg
 Scalar and vector quantity)
What causes
force??
https://youtu.be/dTgMb2HEN1E (Types of forces)
What causes force??
Ans. Force is caused due to an interaction. The strength of the applied force is known as its magnitude.
Magnitude is a numerical value followed by a unit. The SI Unit of force is Newton.
1Newton is the force which when applied to a mass of 1kg ,moves it with a speed of 1m/s

NET FORCE

The net force is defined as the algebraic sum of all the forces acting on an
object. The net force is a term used in a system if there is significant
number of forces .
CASE -1

Forces applied on an object in the same

direction add to one another

Find out the net force applied in this case-

CASE-2
If the two forces act in the opposite direction on an object, the net force
acting on it is the difference between the two forces

Body will move in the direction of the greater force.

Net force is zero- Body will not move
EFFECTS OF FORCE
ON AN OBJECT...

Only unbalanced forces can make an object move from its

stationery position. If the forces are balanced, the object will
remain at rest.
NATURE OF FORCE:
1. Forces applied on an object in the same direction add to one another.
2. If the two forces act in the opposite direction on an object, the net force
acting on it is the difference between the two forces.
3. A force could be larger or smaller than the other or equal to each other. The
strength of the force is usually expressed by its magnitude.
4. If the direction or the magnitude of the applied force changes, the effect of
the force also changes.
5. Generally, more than one force acts on an object, the effect on the object is
the net force on the object.
EFFECTS OF FORCE ON AN OBJECT:
 1. Force can change the state of motion:
a. A force applied on an object can change its speed.
b. If the force applied on an object is in the direction of its motion,
the speed of the object increases.
c. If the force applied on an object is opposite to the direction of
motion, the speed of the object decreases.

A FORCE MAY BRING A CHANGE IN THE STATE OF MOTION OF AN

OBJECT.
What do you understand by ‘State of Motion’?
The state of motion of an object is described by its speed and direction of motion. The state
of rest is considered to be the state of zero speed. An object may be at rest or in motion .
Both are its state of motion.
EFFECTS OF FORCE ON AN OBJECT:

2. Force can change the shape of an object:

The application of force may change the shape of the object. The
changing of shape depends on the nature of the object and the amount
of force applied.

TYPES OF
FORCES
1. CONTACT FORCES:
1. CONTACT FORCES:
A. MUSCULAR FORCE: Since muscular force can be applied only when it is in
contact with an object, it is called contact force.
1.
2.
3.

B. FRICTION: The force of friction always acts on all moving objects and its direction
is always opposite to the direction of the motion. Since friction arises due to contact
between two surfaces it is a contact force.
1.
2.
3.
2. NON-CONTACT FORCES
2. NON-CONTACT FORCES:
A. MAGNETIC FORCE: A magnet can exert a force on another magnet without being in touch or
contact. Thus, an example of non-contact force.
1.
2.
B. ELECTROSTATIC FORCE: The force exerted by a charged body on another charged or uncharged
body is known as electrostatic force. This force comes into play without or even before the body comes
into contact. Thus, an example of non-contact force.

PRESSURE:
https://youtu.be/-T7Hq6XdCi4
PRESSURE: The force acting on a unit area of a surface.
Calculate the pressure developed by a force of 50 N acting on
an area of 10m2.

Force(F)=50N
Area (A)=10m2
Pressure=Force/Area
Pressure = 50N= 5Pa

A force exerts a pressure of 45N/m2 when it acts on an area
of 10m2. Calculate the total force.

Pressure=Force
Area

Force=Pressure x Area
Force=45N/m2
Area = 10m2

=45N/m2 X 10m2=450N
Calculate the pressure when a force of 200 N is exerted on an
area of :(a) 10m2 (b) 5m2

Pressure=force

a) Force =200N b) Force=200N
Area=10m2 Area=5m2

1. A force of 100 N is applied on an area of 4 m2. Compute
pressure being applied on the area.
2. A force of 100 N is applied on an area of 5 m2. Compute the
pressure being applied to the area.

3. A force of 5 N is applied on a body over a surface area of 5 m2.

Calculate the pressure applied on the surface.

4. If a pressure of 1Pa was experienced on an area of 10 m2.

How much force was applied?
1. A force of 100 N is applied on an area of 4 m2.
Compute pressure being applied on the area.

Answer:
Given: Force = 100 N, Area = 4 m2
∴ Pressure = Force / Area =100 / 4
= 25 Pa.
TOPIC : PRESSURE
EXERTED BY
LIQUIDS (fluids)
FLUID PRESSURE - Fluid pressure refers to a measurement of
the force per unit area that acts on an object in the fluid or on a closed
container's surface. Furthermore, the cause of this pressure is due to
acceleration, gravity, or by forces that are outside the closed container.

What is a buoyant force?
Buoyant force or buoyancy is the upward force a fluid
exerts on an object. When you try to immerse an object
in water, then you can feel an upward force exerted on
the object, which increases as you push the object deeper
into the water.

What is ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE?
Define atmospheric pressure.

 The earth is surrounded by air. This envelop of air is known

as the atmosphere. The atmospheric air extends up to
many kilometers above the surface of the earth.
 Thepressure exerted by this air is known as the
atmospheric pressure.
Barometer is the instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure.

Atmospheric pressure at sea level is approximately

1,00,000N/m2.
As we go higher above the Earth’s surface, the atmospheric
pressure decreases.

The pressure inside our body is equal to the atmospheric pressure.

https://youtu.be/xJHJsA7bYGc ( AIR PRESSURE )

Why does the atmospheric pressure
decrease as you go up a mountain?
As height increases, the amount of air over a unit area decreases. Therefore the
atmospheric pressure will reduce due to lower air molecules.
