Compound Interest
• What does compound interest mean?
• Formula:
n
 R 
A  P 1  
 100 
A = total amount at the end
P = amount at the beginning
R = interest rate
n = period of time
Compound Interest
• What happens if the interest is
1. compounded yearly?
R and n do not change
2. compounded monthly?
R is divided by 12
n is multiplied by 12

Ex: 2% p.a. (per annum) for 3 years

2 1
R % % n  3  12  36 times
12 6
Compound Interest
• What happens if the interest is
3. compounded half-yearly?
R is divided by 2
n is multiplied by 2

Ex: 2% p.a. (per annum) for 3 years

2
R  %  1% n  3  2  6 times
2
Compound Interest
• What happens if the interest is
4. compounded quarterly?
R is divided by 4
n is multiplied by 4

Ex: 2% p.a. (per annum) for 3 years

2 1
R % % n  3  4  12 times
