Title:- Motherboard

• A motherboard is the main printed circuit

board in general-purpose computers and
other expandable Systems
• The motherboard is a computer's central
communications backbone connectivity
point, through which all components and
external peripherals connect.

4 1. Power supply unit.

• A Power Supply Unit (PSU is an internal IT

hardware component. Despite the name, Power
Supply Units (PSU) do not supply systems with
power - instead they convert it. Specifically, a
power supply converts the alternating high
voltage current (AC) into direct current (DC),
and they also regulate the DC output voltage to
the fine tolerances required for modern
computing components.

5 2. Hard disk drive

• A hard disk drive (HDD) is an internal

or external computer component that
stores data, such as the operating
system, applications, and user files
• HDDs are “non-volatile” storage
devices, meaning they retain stored data
even when power isn't being supplied

4
6 3. CPU/processor

• The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is

the primary component of a computer that
acts as its “control center.” The CPU, also
referred to as the “central” or “main”
processor, is a complex set of electronic
circuitry that runs the machine's operating
system and apps.

4
7 4. RAM (random access memory)

• Random access memory (RAM) is the

hardware in a computing device that
provides temporary storage for the
operating system (OS), software
programs and any other data in current
use so they're quickly available to the
device's processor.

8 5. Mouse and keyboard connectors

Computer motherboards must have two separate connectors

that allow users to connect their external mouse and keyboard.
• The PS/2 port is a 6-pin mini-DIN connector used for
connecting keyboards and mice to a PC compatible
computer system.
There are three main types of connectors used for
keyboards and mice:
 the 5-pin Deutsche Industrie Norm (DIN) connector
 the 6-pin mini-DIN (PS/2) connector, and
 USB mouse and keyboard connectors.

9 6. Chipsets
• a chipset is a set of electronic components on one or
more integrated circuits that manages the data flow
between the processor, memory and peripherals.
• Different types of chipsets
1. Northbridge chipsets that handle high-speed
communication between the CPU, RAM, and graphics
controller.
2. Southbridge chipsets that manage slower-speed
devices like hard drives and USB ports.

4
10 7. Cooling fans

• Cooling fans are also known as panel fans, they

are an ideal solution for application that requires
high efficiency and silent operation.
• The cooling fans work by sucking the cold air
at the bottom vent, and thereby realizing hot air
from the top vent as the heat rises upward.

11 8. Adapter cards and expansion slots
• an expansion card (also called an expansion
board, adapter card, peripheral card or accessory
card) is a printed circuit board that can be inserted
into an electrical connector, or expansion slot (also
referred to as a bus slot) on a computer's motherboard
(see also backplane) to add functionality to a
computer system.
• Expansion cards allow the capabilities and interfaces
of a computer system to be extended or supplemented
in a way appropriate to the tasks it will perform.

4
12 9. CMOS Battery
• CMOS stand for Complementary metal-oxide-
semiconductor
• CMOS is a small amount of memory on a computer
motherboard that stores the Basic Input/Output
System (BIOS) settings
• The main purpose of CMOS in computers is to
store important system settings and configurations
such as the date and time, boot order, hardware
settings, and password information.
• This information is stored in a small battery-powered
chip on the motherboard called the CMOS battery.

13 10. ROM Memory

• ROM (Read-Only Memory) is a type of

computer memory that stores permanent data and
instructions for the device to start up.
• ROM is a non-volatile form of memory that
stores data permanently and cannot be written
over or erased. It can only be read from, which
makes it ideal for use in computers because it
allows them to access information quickly
without having to constantly write and rewrite
data.

14 11.AGP Slot
• An Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) is a
point to point channel that is used for high-
speed video output.
• This port is used to connect graphic cards to a
computer’s motherboard. It increases the
speed at which machines can render graphics
while using the system’s resources more
efficiently.
• The primary purpose of an AGP is to convey
3-D images much more smoothly than is
possible on a regular PC.

4
15 12. Universal serial bus (USB)

• Universal serial bus (USB) is defined as a

standard that mentions the specifications used
by cables, ports, and protocols that enable
simple and universally accepted connectivity
between a host and peripheral device.
