Course Objective
To learn the fundamentals of data models and to conceptualize and depict a database system using ER diagram

To know the fundamental concepts of transaction processing- concurrency control techniques and recovery procedure.
Course Outcome

1. Ability to identify the characteristics of a DB, its architecture and modelling the real-world problem using ER Diagrams.
Ability to differentiate between various file organizations methodologies.

CONTENT OF THE SYLLABUS
UNIT-I [15]
• Introduction: Characteristics of database approach, various views of data models,
Introduction to database languages & environments, Advantages of DBMS over file
processing systems, DBMS Architecture and Data Independence, DBA and its role.
• Data Models: E-R Diagram, mapping constraints, keys, reduction of E-R diagram into
tables. roles and structural constraints, weak entities, enhanced E-R and object modelling,
Sub classes; Super classes, inheritance, specialization and generalization. Network &
Hierarchical Models.

UNIT-II [15]

• File Organization: Indexed sequential access files; implementation using B & B++ trees,
hashing, hashing functions, collision resolution, extendible hashing, dynamic hashing
approach implementation and performance
• Relational Data Model: Relational model concepts, relational constraints, relational
algebra SQL: SQL queries, programming using SQL.
• EER and ER to relational mapping: Data base design using EER to relational language.

• Data Normalization: Functional Dependencies, Normal form up to 3rd normal form.


• Concurrency Control: Transaction processing, locking techniques and associated,
database recovery, security and authorization. Recovery techniques, Database security.
