NON PROBABILITY

SAMPLING
WHAT IS NON PROBABILITY
SAMPLE ?
Non Probability Sampling is one in which all
the items of the universe do not get the equal
chance of being selected.
The selection process is Biased.
The investigator selects samples on the basis of
the convenience or his judgement rather than on
the basis of probability.
ADVANTAGES
•Cost-effectiveness: It is a budget-friendly way of collecting data.
•Time Efficiency: Offers quick insights due to rapid implementation.
•Flexibility: Participant selection is tailored based on specific
criteria.
•Exploratory Focus: Ideal for generating hypotheses and insights
swiftly.
•Access to Hidden Populations: Reaches elusive or marginalized
groups effectively.
DISADVANTAGES
•Less likelihood of representing the genuine population fairly.
•Reduced external validity.
•Less generalizability to the broader population.
•Inability to evaluate if the population is well represented.
•Unclear sample size due to lack of boundaries for the
relevant population.
JUDGEMENT SAMPLING
Under this method, the choice of sample item depends exclusively on the
judgement of the investigator.
On the basis of his own choice, he tries to select the best representative of the
whole population.
It is also known as deliberate & purposive sampling.
Example - Imagine you’re a coach for a basketball team, and you want to pick a
few players to join a special training session for three-point shooting. Instead of
picking players randomly, you decide to choose only those who have already shown
they’re good at shooting from a distance. You’re using your own judgment to pick
players because you know these players have the specific skill you’re looking for.
QUOTA SAMPLING
Under this method, the item of the population are subdivided into various group
and then a quota (number of the item to be selected from each sub-group) is fixed.
In the Quota Sampling, the selection of the sampling units depends upon the
personal judgement of the investigator . So, this is a type of judgement sampling
only.
Example – a survey is conducted in a city for 200 peoples the effect of Covid -19.
S. No. Quota No.
1. Housewives 40
2. Working Persons 70
3. Retired Persons 30
4. Children 60
CONVENIENCE SAMPLING
Under this method, while selecting the sample units,
the investigator gives special attention to his
convenience.
It is also known as Chunk Sampling or Accidental
Sampling.
Example- To estimate the average monthly package of
a pharmacy graduate in pharmaceutical companies , the
investigator (belonging to Ahmedabad) can take a
convenience sample from Ahmedabad only and estimate
the average monthly package in India.
SNOWBALL SAMPLING
When the snowball roll over ice gets bigger and bigger
as it moves further. Snowball Sampling technique works
as a similar trend.
In this researcher selects one/two initial respondents,
collects data from them. These initial respondent refers
other respondents.
 Snowball Sampling is also called Chain sampling,
Referral Sampling, Friend to Friend Sampling &
Network Sampling.
