Modified Atmosphere Packaging: History

 12th Century – first use of MAP was in


transportation of lamb meat from Australia to
England.
 1927s – recorded as extension of the shelf-life of
apples by storing them in atmosphere with
reduced O2 and increased CO2.

 1970s – commercially introduced for retail packs.


Modified Atmosphere Packaging: Definition

MAP is defined as ‘the packaging of a perishable


product in an atmosphere containing gas
