PESTS OF SILKWORM

Pests of silkworm:

 Uzi fly (Exorista bombycis)

 Dermestid beetle (Dermestes maculatus)
 Straw mite
 Ants
 Nematodes
Uzi fly (Exorista bombycis)

 The adult uzi fly is blackish grey in colour.

 It is bigger than common houseful and more
efficient to flight.
 It has four longitudinal stripes on the dorsimental of thorax and
three crosswise stripes on the abdomen.
Lifecycle of Uzi fly:

 After mating female lays 300 eggs (1 or 2 eggs / larvae).

 Laid in inter segmental region of the larvae body. Hatching of maggots after 1 to 3
days .
 Maggots bores inside the body of larvae and feeds on Silkworm tissues for 5 to 7
days.
Life cycle of Uzi fly:

 The place of entry of maggot into silkworm body develops a black scar.
 The three instar of uzi fly grow inside the body of silkworm.
 After 5-7 days last instar comes out by rupturing of skin and larvae of silkworm dies.
 Maggots become pupae in darker place and life cycle completed within 17 to 22 days.
Control of Uzi fly:

 Cultural method: Collection and destruction of uzi Infected silkworm larvae

 Collection and destruction of Uzi maggots ,pupae and uzi fly adult.
 Fix wire mesh to windows and doors.
 Physical method: Keep uzi trap solution in white traps near window and doors( 3ft
above the ground level).2 tablet/ litre of water. Rs.10/packet.
Control measures:

 Chemical method : Dust diflubenzuron at 5g/sq.feet.

 Spray 2 % bleaching powder solution On the body of silkworm larvae
 Biological method : Release of Nesolynx thymus by keeping Parasitoid pupae ready for
emergence On 2nd day after Keeping packets.
 Two pouches/100 dfls. Rate: 800/pouch
Dermestid beetle:

 The adult of dermestid beetle is black in colour and the elytra is black/ brown.
 It has club shaped antenna.
 Life cycle of dermestid beetele:
 The female lays 150-200 days in the floss of the cocoons.
 Larvae emerge after 28 to 40 days .
 Total life cycle : 38 -54 days.
Life cycle of dermestid beetle:

 It Feeds a silk of cocoon and destroy the cocoon.

 The infested cocoons (especially seed and stifled cocoons) show the presence of
multiple irregular holes on them.
 Enter the grainages and attack abdomen of adult moth.
 Beetles mostly attracted to stifled cocoons. Enter the godown, pierce the cocoon and
eat the larvae inside.
Control measures :

 Should not keep discarded cocoons, eggs near the rearing house ,godown, grainges.
 Collect the grubs and adults either by sweeping or by using a
vacuum cleaner and destroy them by burning or dipping in soap
solution
 Exposure of beetle infested (grubs and adults) pierced / stifled
cocoons packed in HDPE (black) bags to sunlight for a period of 6
hours.
 Store pierced cocoons in Deltamethrin treated bags (bags soaked in 0.028%
deltamethrin solution and dried in store.
Straw mite :

 Factor responsible for pest outbreak - Accidental transported into rearing room.
They are present in fields- Bamboo, straw.
 Female after mating attaches to body of silkworm larvae.
 It sucks nutrientive solution from the body and also release toxins into the body.
 Affected larvae become lethargic and vomits green fluid ,excretes black fluid- dies.
 Control measures:
 Do not bring the straw and bamboo from the field.
 Use acaricide - abamectin,Bayer opran-0.3ml/lit of water .
Ants :

 They feed on silkworm larvae.

 Control measure :
 Under the rearing stand ,use the ant wells (either circular/ triangle).
 Kerosene water added inside the ant well.
 Also kept in mountages for avoid eating and destroying of cocoons.
Nematodes :

 It infect inside the larvae of silkworm.

 The anterior region of infected larvae show transparent in colour.Posterior region
show silky / White in colour later comes out.
 Control measures:
 Maintain Clear rearing condition .Isolate infected larvae
 Provide quality mulberry leaves and avoid contaminated Feed.
 Chemical treatment – 4mg Albendazole/Levamisole.
Pests in cuddalore District

 Ant ,wasp,squirrel and spider.

 Ant- cause 5to 10% damage.attack 1st stage
spray 2% rogar before 15 days of rearing.burning nest well before rearing.
 Spider - 1st instar worms
 Wasp- picking young age worms.
Control measures : Destroying hives and covering with nylon nets.
