1.

It represents a point (x, y) where x and y are elements of all

real numbers.

2. It is composed of two perpendicular number lines that meet at a

point.

3. It is the point of intersection of the xy – plane.

4. The two perpendicular lines divide the plane into four regions
called

5. It is the horizontal line in the plane.

Rectangular Coordinate
System
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
a. Describe the rectangular coordinate system and other related terms;
b. Plot points on a coordinate system;
c. Determine the coordinate of a given point on a coordinate plane; and
d. Use the coordinate plane to solve problems in daily life.
Let’s Explore!
Rene Descartes was a French man who lived
in the 1600s. And this a story of some people
on how he discovered the Rectangular
Coordinate System. One day, Descartes
noticed a fly crawling around on the ceiling.
He watched the fly for a long time. He wanted
to know how to tell someone else where the
fly was. Finally, he realized that he could
describe the position of the fly by its distance
from the walls of the room.
When he got out of bed, Descartes wrote
down what he had discovered. Then he tried
describing the positions of points, the same
way he described the position of the fly.
Descartes had invented the coordinate plane!
In fact, the coordinate plane is sometimes
called the Cartesian plane, in his honor.
Terms:

• x – axis – horizontal line

• y – axis – vertical line
• Origin
• Quadrants
• x – coordinate (abscissa)
• y – coordinate (ordinate)
Example:

Plot and label the following points on the coordinate plane and
determine which quadrant is each point located.
A. (3, 5)
B. (-2, -6)
C. (4, -1)
D. (-5, 7)
Example:

Plot and label the following points on the coordinate plane and
determine which quadrant is each point located.
A. (3, 5) – Quadrant II
B. (-2, -6) – Quadrant III
C. (4, -1) – Quadrant IV
D. (-5, 7) – Quadrant II
Food Establishment’s Position

Direction: Describe the location of each fast-food chains that you have
pasted by completing the following table. An example is done for you.
Food Establishment Coordinate Quadrant/Axis
Example: Your house (0,0) At the origin
Group Activity: Object’s Position
Direction: Group yourselves into 8 or 9 members. Describe the location of
each point below by completing the following table.
Object Coordinates Quadrant/Axis
1. Spoon
2. Television
3. Laptop
4. Bag
5. Pillow
6. Camera
7. Table
Assessment: Self Check

A. Direction: In a ½ sheet of paper, write the coordinates of each point.

Identify the quadrant/axis where each point lies. Complete the table below.

Coordinates Quadrant/Axis

1. M (___, ___)

2. A (___, ___)

3. T (___, ___)

4. H (___, ___)
B. Direction: Draw a Cartesian plane. Plot and label the following points.
1. C (0, 7)
2. A (5, 4)
3. R (6, -3)
4. T (3, -5)
5. E (7, 0)
6. S (1, 5)
7. I (11, -7)
8. A (-1, 6)
9. N (8, 3)
Assignment:
Direction: Do it with your pair. On a whole sheet of paper, plot the following
points in a graphing paper. Connect the points following the sequence of the
alphabet. What figure have you formed?

A (4, 2), B (2, 0), C (-1, -3), D (4, -3), E (9, -3), F(6, 0)
