Naming Ions
1. Cations
The name of the cation is the same as the name
of the element (or more appropriately, with the
word "ion" example, sodium ion). The main
group elements usually form only one cation.
However, many transition elements (and a few
metals under Groups 13 to 15) form two or more
different cations. The different ions of one such
metal is distinguished by their charge, indicated
by a Roman numeral enclosed in a parenthesis
after the element's name. The charge indicates
how many electrons were lost by the atom in
forming the ion.
Naming Ions
2. Anions
The name of the anion is derived from the name of the element and given the suffix -ide.
Naming Compounds
To name ionic compounds given the formula,
we follow these steps:
1. Separate the formula of the cation from that
of the anion. Determine the charge of each
ion.
2. First write the name of the cation , followed
by the name of the anion with a space in
between.
