NETWORK
-A network is 2 or more electronic devices
that are connected or, can be connected by Wifi. If the
device isn’t connected by a network it is called
Standalone Computer.
What is a network
Networks and servers
SERVERS
-They may have a server which means it acts
like the centre of communication eg emails, file storage
or internet access. If the device is connected to a
server it is called Client.
ADVANTAGES
-You can share hardware like a printer and
software so lots of people can use the same program
and data to access your work from different
Advantages and computers. Networking is very important as if you
Disadvantages didn’t have it, you wouldn’t be able to send emails or
instant texts. In conclusion, without a network we

wouldn’t be able to communicate.

DISADVANTAGES
-In a network, you can connect various
computers or devices but there can be some
problems doing this. The network may break
causing, for example, computers not being able to
send photos. Hackers and viruses are normally
spread by networks so you and your friends would
be exposed to them.
Types of
networks ● Local area network(LAN)

● A wide area network(WAN)

Main types of networks
h

LAN
-When computers are connected in a
small place like a home or a site it is
called Local Area. LAN can be used to
create data or hardware or to share
LAN internet with other devices. LAM uses a
Local area network Broadband router to connect devices
this is what Home networks are. These
devices include laptops, printers… and
smart devices like speakers.
WAN
When devices are connected together
over a large area like a company in
Belgium connecting to a company in
WAN London means it is a WAN( a wide area
network). The biggest WAN we know is

NETWORKING HARDWARE

NETWORKING Devices need in order to connect

networking hardware such as
HARDWARE routers, hubs, switches and bridges.
All these equipment can individually

perform different jobs. A router can
make some of these pieces become
part of the same hardware.
ROUTERS
A router is a device that makes
possible users or networks communicate
with each other. It is the equipment used at
home to connect to the internet.
Routers, MODEMS
Modems and Old piece of equipment that used the
Hubs telephone line to connect to the internet. It
converts digital to analogue signals.

Hubs
A Hub is a device that sends
information to all the users attached to it.
This is a waste of Bandwidth, and can lead
to privacy issues.
h BRIDGES
A bridge is an old type of hardware used to
connect few networks together. It is similar to
the Hub but its efficiency has increased.

SWITCHES
Bridges, Switches, A switch is a newer type of hardware that
connects users. Each user is identified by its
WAP MAC address so the switch makes sure that a
piece of information always gets only to the
right recipient. It is more efficient and more
secure.

WAP
Wireless access points allow users to connect
without using cables.

forming a closed loop.

Mesh topology-Where old user connect to

each other(fully meshed) or just some of
them connect to each other(partially
meshed).
