Comparison between IM and

EWM
Benefit of EWM over IM are below:

1. In EWM, Stock position in bin level means exact location within the warehouse house (Storage location), in IM stock
will be in storage location level.
2. The picking strategies include standard strategies first-in first-out (FIFO), last-in first-out (LIFO), picking by shelf-life
expiration date (SLED), or partial quantities first. In IM level – only batch determination logic available.
3. Planning and Monitoring: the system supports to plan, monitor and optimize work processes due to the overviews of all
the goods receipts, goods issues and warehouse stocks.
4. Radio Frequency Connection: with the help of RF data can be entered quickly and flawlessly, by scanning the barcodes
information can be recorded and verified to ensure high standards in a warehouse. IM doesn't provide any RF
transactions.
5. SAP Warehouse Management allows you to manage your material flow, using advanced putaway and picking
strategies.
6. Storage bin capacity management - IM doesn't provide any capacity management on storage location level.
7. Storage bin status management / storage bin blocking - again that is not available on storage location level.
8. Labour management – can be used in EWM and cant be done with IM level. Warehouse task execution confirmation -
WM/EWM creates transfer / warehouse orders. Then they are executed and confirmed by warehouse person. That is
not available in IM - a material document is either posted or not existing.
9. Optimize warehouse movements using task and resource management
10. With EWM, we can map below process:
a. HU management,
b. Loading/Unloading,
c. Opportunistic cross docking,
d. Slotting and rearrangement,
e. Deconsolidation (during putaway),
f. Warehouse internal packing
g. value added service (during picking and putaway process)
h. Yard Management
SAP EWM Disadvantages

There are a few disadvantages of EWM, namely:

•The complete set up of EWM takes a lot of effort and rigorous testing.
•The cost of implementing EWM is higher than WM in terms of the number of consultants involved for ongoing
support.
•EWM is not a very user-friendly application due to several transactions and process steps involved. Hence, it
requires a lot of training for end-users.
•For Non-S4 HANA, EWM is coming in a decentralized version which requires the additional cost of the system and
additional efforts for the integration set up with ERP.

Which Option to Prefer: SAP EWM vs WM?

SAP EWM is the solution to all the basic and complex warehouse processes. It has advanced features and much
more than what SAP WM/IM could offer. Although implementing SAP EWM requires a lot of time, effort, and cost,
but once implemented, it will be a stable solution for the long term.
Looking at all the above pros and cons, and considering that the SAP is going to sunset WM application in a few
years, it is highly recommended to opt for SAP EWM for a new greenfield implementation. The companies already
using the SAP WM application are also migrating to SAP EWM.
