CONTEXTS
OF ART
ENCOUNTERS
This lesson explains the importance of Philippine art and
cultural forms in the community, which may mean
clusters of residents in a region, ancestral land, or
metropolitan center.
Learning Guide
Identify the different contexts of encounters with art. Think of the factors that
create categories of distinction among them.
What makes up a community and how and why does art become part of its
heritage?
What differentiates a government-run art institution from one run by a private
entity and why do these art institutions exist? What purpose do they server?
What distinguishes an artist-run initiative from one run by a third-party
individual or institution?
CONTEXTS
All about relationships and may vary
according to the space where projects occur and
the arts managers who organize them (encounter
between art and audience).
INSTITUTIONAL
projects are led by institutions
that operate on a national,
regional or international scale
COMMUNITY
where art is strongly linked to its
social relevance; maybe mediated
by civil society organizations or
the artisan themselves; or can be
situated in metropolitan areas
MARKET
relationship between art and
economics such as
entrepreneurs who have
creative enterprise out of their
love of arts
ARTIST-RUN
INITIATIVES
artists may establish
organization or solo venture
and deal with their market
directly in order to sustain
themselves through craft
Arts encountered in
communities are:
• ritual - based (related to
myths, customs and
traditions)
Arts encountered in
communities are:
• considered culture bearers
(acknowledged by expert in
the community the art form
they are identified with)
Art Institutions
An art institution is an
organization with
established hierarchies,
structures of authority and
channels of
communication.
• The manpower support and rosters of experts are funded by the corporation or
philanthropic individuals.
• The decision concerning the art forms to promote or feature undergoes a rigorous
process where pool of experts may be consulted but the final decision rests on the
member of the board.
• Corporation and foundations can support artists on a long-term or short-term
basis, sponsor competitions and publish materials about artists and their artworks.
• Example: The Ayala Museum, run privately by the Ayala Foundation Inc., houses
permanent exhibits of rich archeological artifacts and historical collections.
Art in my Place
List five organizations in your municipality or region. Visit their
websites or social media page if they have any. How do you
classify the context by which art is encountered in each
organization? Explain your reason why providing at least five
characteristics that matches with the given characteristics given in
this lesson. Fill up the following table using Google Docs.
