CLASSIFICATION OF

COMPUTERS
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson you should be able to:
State the types of computer
Classify computers
• According to purpose
• According to speed/size
• According to data processed
Classification of Computers

Computers can be classified in the following methods:

Computational Method
Size and Capability

Classification based on Computational Method: Based on the way a system

performs a computations, a computer can be classified in the following ways:
Digital
Analog
Hybrid
Digital Computers

This type of computer accepts data in binary form(0 and 1).

They work by counting data. Most computers are digital
computers. Other computers that work like digital
computers are calculator, most recent car speedometer,
electronic watch and stop watch.
A digital computer can count and accept numbers and
letters through various input devices. The input device
converts the data into electronic pulse, and performs
arithmetic operation on numbers in discrete form. In
addition to performing arithmetic operations, They are also
capable of:
Storing data for processing
Performing logical operations
Editing or deleting the input data
Analog Computers

Analog computers process data input in a

continuous form. Data such as voltage,
resistance or temperature are represented in
the computer as a continuous, unbroken of
flow of information, as in engineering and
scientific application where quantities to be
processed exist as waveform or continually
rising and falling voltage, pressure and so
on. As the measurement in analog computers
are carried out by a few single-purposes
device, the analog computer offers low cost
and ease in programming.
Hybrid Computers

Computers can also be built

using some parts employing
digital computation, and some
parts based on Analog
principles. Such computers are
called Hybrid Computers.
Classification Based on Size and Capability

On the basis of size and capability. Digital computers can be classified as:
Super Computers
Mainframe Computers
Mini Computers
Micro Computers
Classification Of According To Size And
Speed
Super Computers

 Super computers are the largest,

fastest, most powerful and most
expensive computer made. Like other
large system, many individuals can
access supercomputers at the same
time. Super computers are used
primarily for scientific application that
are more mathematically intensive. The
aerospace, automotive, chemical,
electronic and petroleum industries use
super computers extensively.
Mainframe Computers

Mainframe computers are less powerful

and more cheaper than super computers.
However, they are big general purpose
computers capable of handling all kinds
of scientific or business application.
Mainframes are used for application as
payroll computation, accounting, business
transaction, information retrieval and
airline seat reservation. Mainframes can
process several million instructions per
second. More than 1,000 remote terminals
can be supported by a Mainframe.
