WHAT IS A BOOTABLE
DEVICE?
A bootable device is a storage device or medium
that contains the necessary files and data to start
(boot) a computer or other computing device. When
you turn on a computer or restart it, the system must
initiate a startup process, and this process often begins
by loading an operating system or a boot loader
program from a bootable device. The term "boot"
comes from the phrase "bootstrap," which refers to the
process of pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps, or
starting from a minimal initial state.
Example of Bootable Device?
• Hard Drive or Solid-State Drive (SSD): The primary
internal storage device of most computers is
typically set up with a bootable partition
containing the operating system and boot loader.
• USB Flash Drive: You can create a bootable USB
flash drive by copying bootable files or an
operating system image to it. Many operating
systems and diagnostic tools can be run directly
from a bootable USB drive.
• CD/DVD: Bootable CDs or DVDs contain an
operating system or software tool that can be
launched when the computer starts up from the
optical drive. These are less common in modern
computers but are still used for certain purposes.
• Network Boot (PXE): Some systems are configured
to boot over a network using a technology called
PXE (Preboot Execution Environment). This allows a
computer to boot from a server on the local
network and load an operating system or software
image from there.
• External Hard Drive: Like USB flash drives,
external hard drives can also be made
bootable, allowing you to run an operating
system or diagnostic tools directly from an
external storage device.
