An Overview of Business Intelligence

Fig: 1 Business intelligence & its parts 9

Business Intelligence

• BI (Business Intelligence) is a set of processes, architectures, and technologies that

convert raw data into meaningful information that drives profitable business actions.
• It is a suite of software and services to transform data into actionable intelligence and
knowledge.
• It has a direct impact on organization’s strategic, tactical and operational business
decisions.
• BI supports fact-based decision making using historical data rather than assumptions
and gut feeling.
• BI tools perform data analysis and create reports, summaries, dashboards, maps,
graphs, and charts to provide users with detailed intelligence about the nature of the
business.

10
Use of Business Intelligence

• Analysing customer behaviours, buying patterns and sales trends

• Measuring, tracking and predicting sales and financial performance
• Budgeting and financial planning and forecasting
• Tracking the performance of marketing campaigns
• Optimising processes and operational performance

11
Organizational Benefits of BI
• Quick answers to critical business questions.
• Align activities with strategy.
• Reduce time spent on data entry and manipulation.
• Gain in depth real time insights into customers.
• Benchmark data against competitor and historical data for continuous
improvements.
• Identify and analyze areas to cut costs and for budget allocation.
• Boost internal productivity by spending time on what’s important.

12
History of Business Intelligence

• Started in the early 90’s, had a surge of

popularity

• Recently has made a big comeback in

businesses.

13
Components of Business Intelligence
• User/End-User Query and Reporting
• OLAP
• Data Mining
• Data Warehousing
• Analytics
• Business Performance Management
• Enterprise Management System

14
User/End-User Query and Reporting
• The end user is the person who uses the software or hardware after it has been
fully developed, marketed, and installed.
• Most end-user querying and reporting tools provide visually oriented,
environments that enable users to design screens for report layouts, the data
columns desired for the report, or the rows of data that they want to select.
• The query tool provides data access, filtering, and simple formatting.
• Reporting tools provide an environment that enables you to create sophisticated
layouts that focus on formatting the data retrieved by the database query.

15
OLAP

• OLAP performs fast analysis of

multidimensional business data.
• Operations
Slicing and Dicing
Drill Down/Up
Roll-up/summarizing
Pivot

Fig. 3 OLAP process

16
Data Mining
• Data mining is the process of analyzing data from different
perspectives and summarizing it into useful information.
• Technically, data mining is the process of finding correlations or
patterns among dozens of fields in large relational databases.

17
Fig 4. Data Mining
Analytics
• Analytics is the discovery, interpretation, and communication of meaningful
patterns in data.
• Analytics is a multidimensional field that uses machine learning techniques to
find meaningful patterns and knowledge in recorded data.

18
Data Warehousing

• Data warehousing is the process of

constructing and using a data
warehouse.
• A data warehouse is constructed by
integrating data from multiple
heterogeneous sources.
• Data warehousing involves data
cleaning, data integration, and data
consolidations.

19
Business Performance Management
• Business performance management is a way of monitoring the methods a
company uses to reach its goals and then using data to find better methods.
• The idea of monitoring management procedures to develop effective methods
for reaching goals has been around since business first began.

20
Enterprise Management System
• Enterprise Management Systems (EMS) Are Large- scale Application Software
Packages That Support Business Processes, Information Flows, Reporting, And
Data Analytics In Complex Organizations.
• Components of Enterprise Management Systems (EMS) are-
ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning )
CAD/CAM/CAE (Computer Aided Design /Manufacturing /Engineering System)
AMS (Attendance Management System)
DMS (Document Management System )
CMS (Communication Management System)
SMS (Security Management System)
