OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)
An operating system (OS) is a collection of
software that manages computer hardware
resources and provides common services for
computer programs. The operating system is a
vital component of the system software in a
computer system. Application programs usually
requires an operating system to function.
WHY WE NEED OPERATING
SYSTEM

An OPERATING SYSTEM is a PROGRAM which acts

as an interface between the user and the hardware to:

Facilitate convenient access to hardware by the user

Improve efficiency of the system
Provide security of the system and its program and
data
Emulate features not available in hardware
FEATURES
Reliable.
Operational at all times.
Provides utilities and system services
Handle memory management and CPU
scheduling
Should coordinate and have good control of
input and output operations and the devices on
which they are performed.

I/O Device management
Network management
Network service
User Interface
FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING
SYSTEM

Providing a user interface

Running applications
Support for built in utility
programs
Control to the computer
hardware
Coordinate between other
software and users
ADVANTAGES
Easy to use
User friendly
Cheap to buy
It is versatile
Intermediate between all hardware's and
software's of the system
No need to know any technical languages
Its the platform of all programs
DISADVANTAGES
If any problems affected in OS, you may lose all
the contents which have been stored already
 Unwanted user can use your own system
Difficult to install
Not transferable
Expensive to troubleshoot and replaced
