HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU

ARE IN SCHOOL?
Write as many different words/phrases as you can…

After 2 minutes, compare with your partner. Are they the same or different?
HOW DO YOU THINK SOME CHILDREN IN VERY
POOR COUNTRIES WOULD FEEL IF THEY WERE
IN SCHOOL?
Write as many different words/phrases as you can…

After 2 minutes, compare with your partner.

WHY DO YOU THINK YOU AND POOR
CHILDREN FEEL DIFFERENTLY?
Discuss with your partner reasons why.

I think we feel differently because…

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES.
I am sure you guys didn’t all feel the same way about school as your partner.
And I am sure you feel different about being in school than a very poor child would feel. This is due to
different living situations, different experiences and different points of view.
All of these things make different perspectives.
This course is all about understanding different perspectives from around the world.
Perspectives 관점 , 시각 = points of view/opinions

Do people in China have the same attitude towards relationships as people in America?
Do people in Hanoi have the same attitude towards road safety as people in Seoul?
Do grade 11’s have the same attitude towards studying as grade 7’s?

Throughout this course, you will be researching lots of information about lots of different subjects, and
trying to understand different perspectives about these subjects.
Understanding different perspectives is really important for building good relationships with people in
A VERY DIFFERENT COURSE…
Global perspectives is a different subject to all other subjects you have studied before.
Normally in class, the teacher talks and the students listen.
In global perspectives, this is reversed. You guys are responsible for (most of) the information you
find. You will practice:
ohow to find relevant information
ohow to express your opinion on the information you find
ohow to identify different perspectives on the information
ohow to think critically about information, and about your opinion on the information
ohow to study independently
ohow to collaborate with others to find and organize information, and how to communicate it
effectively
So, unlike normal classes, you will find the information, you will explain to information, and I will
listen and try to learn from you.
Fun, right!
3 ASSESSMENTS, 2 YEARS
WHAT I WANT FROM YOU
Because this is a very different subject, where you will be working independently/in pairs/in
groups a lot, I need you to be ready to do these things:
oYou need to be responsible for all the work you do in school and at home. This is not freetime,
this is independent work. As such, you always need to be ready to research, think and work as best
as you can.
oYou need to be prepared to think for yourself. I cannot tell you any answers, I can only ask you
more questions. I want you all to be confident with what you think, and tell me.
oYou need to be ready to work as effectively as you can. If you learn new words/ideas – write them
down. If you don’t understand something – ask me. If you find something interesting – learn about
it.
oYou need to think deeply about what you are interested in and what you want to learn about. I will
teach you basic ideas, but then you have the freedom to learn more about whatever you want, and
tell me about it. This is an opportunity to research things that are not boring!
oYou need to use lots of different sources to find information – books, magazines, internet articles,
newspapers, tv, even memes.
BE READY TO LEARN!
Please always bring things you need to learn effectively into school - textbooks, pens, laptops...
Use the textbooks if you want to learn more things independently. You are in control of how much
or how little you learn.
Take care about what you research. Try to learn about things you care about. Use many different
news sources. I have given you a list of different news sources on your paper.
Keep all of your global perspectives work organized. Any vocabulary sheets, articles, new
information – keep it all together, ready to access when you need it.
Try to read about at least one current event a week, and talk about it with your friends/me. Then
you are practicing learning information and analysing perspectives. If you can explain this current
event to me, even better!
Complete all homework or tasks I set you, and be ready to talk about them. I want us to discuss
things a lot in this class.
Ask me about any issues you have, if you don’t ask, I wont always know that you need help.
Make sure you totally understand anything you research. I will always be asking you questions on
it to check you understand.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
You are going to be finding lots
of information about specific
things. You then need to think
about your own perspective on
the information.
Therefore, you need to make
sure you totally understand
what you are researching. To do
this, you should always be
asking yourself questions and
answering them. A good way to
do this is with the Socratic
Method 
IS CLIMATE CHANGE A PROBLEM
FOR NOW OR FOR LATER?
Discuss this question with your
partner.
Tell your partner your answer,
then try to answer the first 3
questions on the picture 
VOCABULARY AND
STRUCTURES
As we have less time for lessons and more time for independent research, you guys need to be responsible for learning
all new words and grammar. I cant always tell you to write every new word. You are almost adults – it is your job.
I have given you are all a vocabulary sheet and grammar structure sheet. Any new words that you learn, you should
write onto this sheet. It will help you throughout the year.

For example, these are two very important structures that show consequences. These will be very useful for your
research. These show what will happen, if we do/don’t do something.

IF something happens, THEN something will happen.

If future (likely to happen)

“if” + present  (“then”) + future (“will”): If an airline company build an airport, (then) they will cause habitat loss.
If students are responsible, they will always write new ideas down.
If conditional (not likely to happen)
“if” + past  (“then”) + conditional (“would”): If we built an airport, (then) we would cause habitat loss.
if we slept in class, we would not learn anything.
