WHO WAS SIR ISAAC NEWTON?
• Sir Isaac Newton PRS was an English mathematician,
physicist, astronomer, alchemist, theologian, and author
widely recognized as one of the greatest
mathematicians and physicists of all time and among
the most influential scientists.
• Sir Isaac Newton worked in many areas of mathematics
and physics. He developed various theories
of gravitation when he was only 23 years old. In around
1698, some twenty years later he presented the three
laws of motion. Newton’s laws of motion give us the
relations between the forces acting on a body and
the motion of the body.
WHAT IS INERTIA? STATEMENT OF FIRST
LAW OF MOTION
 Newton's first law of motion states that a body at rest
remains at rest, or, if in motion, remains in motion at
a constant velocity unless acted on by a net external
force. This is also known as the law of inertia. Inertia
is the tendency of an object to remain at rest or
remain in motion.
 Newton’s First Law of Motion also known as Law of
Inertia states that every object persists to stay in
uniform motion in a straight line or in the state of rest
unless an external force acts upon it.
EXPLANATION OF
FORWARD FALLING OF PASSENGERS WHEN THE BUS
SUDDENLY STOPS…
• The bus moves our lower portion of the body, i.e.,
the legs go in motion along with the bus as it is in
direct contact with the floor of the bus. And
simultaneously, our upper body also comes in
motion gradually. Thus our whole body comes in
motion. But when the bus stops, our legs which are
in direct contact with the bus, also stops but our
upper body is still in motion. Thus our legs stop and
our body goes forward. This is the reason why we
tend to lean forward when the moving bus stops
suddenly. This is also because of their inertia as
they are in state of motion even when the bus has
come to rest.
BACKWARD FALLING OF PASSENGERS WHEN THE BUS
SUDDENLY STARTS…

• The passengers in a bus tend to fall

backward when it starts suddenly due
to inertia as the passengers tend to
remain in the state of rest while the
bus starts to move. When the bus
stops suddenly, people fall forward
because their inertia as they are in
state of motion even when the bus has
come to rest.
WHY USE OF SEAT BELT IS SAFE AND COMPULSURY
WHILE DRIVING…

• Seat belts are mainly provided to

prevent injuries in case of
unpredicted crashes or accidents.
According to Newton’s first law of
motion, when the car suddenly
stops or crashes, the person sitting
on a seat can be thrown forward
due to inertia of motion and might
lead to injuries.
WHY IS IT ADVISABLE TO TIE LUGGAGE KEPT ON THE
ROOF TOP OF BUS OR A CAR…

• While the bus/car is moving,

luggage tends to remain in
inertia of motion state. When
the bus/car stops, the luggage
tends to resist the change and
due to inertia of motion it
moves forward and may fall off.
That's why it is advised to tie
any luggage kept on the roof of
a bus with a rope.
HOW THE FRUITS ARE PLUCKED OFF THE BRANCHES
WHEN THE TREE IS SHAKEN…

• When a tree is shaken, the tree

moves to and fro while the
fruits and leaves remain in
their state of rest on account
of their inertia and thus fruits
and leaves separate from the
tree and fall from the tree.
IF A PIECE OF PAPER PLACED UNDER A PILE OF BOOKS
IS SUDDENLY PULLED, IT DOES NOT DISTURB THE PILE
OF BOOKS…
• Initially, both the piece of paper
and the pile of books are in a state
of rest. When the piece of paper
placed under a pile of books is
suddenly pulled it is set into
motion, while the pile of books
remain in the state of rest due to
inertia of rest. Thus, the pile of
books does not move.
DUST CAN BE REMOVED FROM A HANGING CARPET BY
SHAKING IT OR BEATING IT WITH A STICK…

• When the carpet is shaken or

beaten by a stick, then the
carpet moves back but the
dust remains still due to
inertia of rest and hence the
dust particles get separated
out.
AN ATHLETE RUNS A CERTAIN DISTANCE BEFORE
TAKING A LONG JUMP…

• An athlete runs before jumping to

gain momentum. Because it helps
in jumping higher and longer
because of inertia of motion
gained due to the motion. When
the athletes Jump they already
have a forward motion that would
be greater than that of a jump
made from standing in one spot.
