THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
FEATURES
Fluid (blood or hemolymph) that transports
materials
System of blood vessels
A heart to pump the fluid through the vessels
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
TYPES
1. Open: fluid is circulated through an open
body chamber.
Arthropods and most mollusks have an open circulatory
system. Hemolymph is contained in a body cavity, the
hemocoel. A series of hearts circulates the fluid.

TYPES
1. Open: fluid is circulated through an open
body chamber.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
TYPES
2. Closed: fluid is circulated through blood
vessels.
Vertebrates, annelid worms, and a few mollusks have a closed
circulatory system.
Blood is moved through blood vessels by the heart’s action. It does
not come in direct contact with body organs.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
TYPES
2. Closed: fluid is circulated through blood
vessels.
Why does an open circulatory
system limit body size?
Less efficient in
moving oxygen to
body tissues.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Blood
Blood is made up of four major components.
Plasma: the liquid portion.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Blood
Plasma
serves as a transportation
system for various substances
within the bloodstream.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Blood
Red blood cells
RBCs lose their nucleus at maturity.
Red color is due to hemoglobin.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Blood
Red blood cells
Hemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells. It
carries oxygen. Red blood cells also remove carbon
dioxide from your body, bringing it to the lungs for you
to exhale.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Blood
White blood cells
White blood cells defend against disease by recognizing
proteins that do not belong to the body.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Blood
Platelets
The primary function of Platelets is to prevent and stop
bleeding.

The Blood Vessels
Blood Vessels are made up of three major
classes.
Arteries and arterioles
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Blood Vessels
Arteries and arterioles
Arterioles, small blood vessels that carry blood away
from your heart.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Blood Vessels
Veins and venules
Veins and venules carry blood to the heart.

Capillaries
Capillaries allow exchange of nutrients, wastes and
gases.
