VERBALS
A verbal is a form of
a verb used as an
adjective, adverb, or
noun.
There are three
types of verbals :
participles, gerunds,
and infinitives
PARTICIPLE
- A verbal used as an adjective.

- A present participle ends in (-


ing). The past participle often end
in (-ed), (-d), (-t), or (-en).
PARTICIPLE
Example:
The crying baby reached
for his mother.
-Here, crying (a form of the verb to cry) is an
adjective describing the noun baby.
PARTICIPLE
Example:
Frightened, the panicking boy
jumped away from the spider.
-Frightened, the past participle of the verb to frighten,
describes the noun boy. Panicking is the present participle
form of the verb, to panic. It modifies the noun boy.
PARTICIPLE
Example:
1. The dancing parrots entertained the
crowd.
2. The wrecked sailboat washed up on shore.
3. The crying baby had a wet diaper.
4. Smiling, she hugged the panting dog.
PARTICIPLE
Example:
1. The burning log fell off the
fire.
2. Walking along the street, we
found for a restaurant.
PARTICIPLE
Example:
3. Ann located her necklace
kept inside a jewelry box.
4-5. Shaken, he walked away
from the wrecked car.
GERUND
- It ends in –ing.

- A verbal used as noun. Like nouns, it can


be used as subject, predicate nominative,
object of preposition “of”, and appositive.
GERUND
Subject – it is being talk about.
Example:

Reading a book is my favorite


past time.
GERUND
Predicate Nominative – it renames the
subject.
Example:

My favorite past time is reading


a book.
GERUND
Object of preposition – a noun or pronoun
that the preposition describes.
Example:
Instead of reading books, he
prefers magazine.
I have to go after exercising.
GERUND
Appositive - noun that renames or describes
the subject to which it is next.

Example:
His past time, reading, has been part
of his life for the past 10 years.

As a noun, infinitives can be used as:

As a noun, infinitives can be used as:

PREDICATE NOMINATIVE
Ex.
Her ambition is to become a doctor.
His greatest aspiration was to climb Mount

As a noun, infinitives can be used as:

DIRECT OBJECT
Ex.
He refused to look at the picture.
He agreed to go with Russel.
INFINITIVE
As a noun, infinitives can be used as:

OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION


Ex.
The speaker is about to begin.
We locked ourselves inside to be safe.
INFINITIVE
As a noun, infinitives can be used as:
APPOSITIVE
Ex.
The girl’s biggest fear, to ride a roller coaster,
was never overcome.
The dog’s favorite game, to play catch,
happened everyday.
INFINITIVE
- Infinitives can also be placed after any noun
in a sentence, acting as an adjective.
Ex.
The best person to consult is your counselor.
Roses are the flowers to give to your loved ones.
INFINITIVE
- Infinitives are formed by placing to in front
of the base form of a verb.
1. Infinitives can act as an adverb. ( usually
telling why)
- Ex. The professor stopped the lecturer to
take a break.
- Ex. The officers returned to help the
inspectors.
GERUND PHRASE
Gerund phrase is a group of words
consisting gerund with complements or
modifiers.

1. Cheering enthusiastically drew people


from yards away.
2. Moving the chair was not easy.
GERUND PHRASE
SUBJECT:

Swimming in the nearby river has been


the pastime of teenage boys.
GERUND PHRASE
OBJECT OF PREPOSITION:

The teenage boys spent their time in


swimming in the nearby river.
GERUND PHRASE
Direct object:

The teenage boys love swimming in the


nearby river.
GERUND PHRASE
Indirect object:

The teenage boys gave swimming in the


nearby river much thought.

bring, give, make, send, show, teach, tell, and

GERUND PHRASE
Predicate Nominative/Noun:

The teenage boys’ favorite pasttime is


swimming in the nearby river.
GERUND PHRASE
