Investigating Disease-related Malnutrition In Hospitalized
Patient With Gastrointestinal Disease: Prevalence, Nutrition
Impact Symptoms (NIS), And Impact On Quality Of Life.
INTRODUCTION
According to the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN)
Disease-Related Malnutrition is define as “a condition from the lack of intake or utilization
of nutrients during any disease state, resulting in weight loss, loss of skeletal muscle,
physical and mental dysfunctions, and worse clinical outcome”.
International studies indicate that around 40% of patients in hospital settings suffer from
malnutrition, a devastating condition that is very common. Malnutrition is associated with
various adverse outcomes such as immune system suppression, slowed wound healing,
muscular atrophy, prolonged hospital stays, more medical expenses, and higher mortality
rates. (Barker et al., 2017)
INTRODUCTION
Increased morbidity and mortality as well as malnutrition are common outcomes of
gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. For instance, research indicates that 75% of teenage patients
with Crohn's disease had growth retardation while 50–70% of adult patients had weight
loss. (O'keefe ,S. J. D., 2009).
Malnutrition is a crucial factor influencing the quality of life in these patients. The overall
quality of life is influenced by the degree of malnutrition, as measured by the MIS. Due to
the related health issues, patients with higher degrees of malnutrition typically have a lower
quality of life. (Baris, Afsar, 2009)
OBJECTIVES

To determine the prevalence of disease-

01 related malnutrition among patients with
gastrointestinal disease.

To investigate the association between

02 disease-related malnutrition and nutrition
impact symptoms in patients with
gastrointestinal disease.

03 To evaluate the impact of disease-related

malnutrition on patients‘ quality of life
(QoL).
METHODOLOGY
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-Sectional study.

SAMPLE SIZE:

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE: Random Sampling

STUDY SETTING: Hospitals of lahore, Pakistan

STUDY TOOLS: Questionnaire that is based on general and
anthropometric information, Subjective global assessment (SGA), the Eating
symptom questionnaire (ESQ),disease related appetite questionnaire
(DRAQ) and EQ-5D.
DATA ANALYSIS: Data will be analyzed with the help of SPSS Software.
