Storage Devices
 Used to store data
 There are three major categories of
storage devices
 Magnetic Storage Devices
 Optical Storage Devices
 Other Storage Devices
Magnetic Storage Devices
 Hard disk
 Magnetic material used, such as Iron
Oxide or Ferrous oxide
 Having track and sectors to organize Data
 In most PCs it is fixed
 Windows Operating System divides the
disk into four areas
 Master Boot Record
 File Allocation Table (FAT)
 Root Folder
 Data Area
Tracks and Sectors on Disk
Hard Disk
 Disk Cache / Buffer
 Data Reading steps
 Controller Chip receive request for data
 Controller check cache for data
 If data not found on cache then locate it
on platters
 Controller transfer data to processor
External and Removable Hard Disk

 External Hard Disk

 Attached with USB Port or FireWire Port
 Capacity can be of 4 TB or more
 Removable Hard Disk
 Used with a drive
 Capacity up to 1TB or more
Miniature Hard Disk
 Tiny hard disks are available both
external and internal
 Used in Portable Media
 Digital Cameras
 Smart Phones
 Capacity from 1 GB to 320 GB
Miniature Hard Disk
Drive Interface Standard
 SATA (Serial Advance Technology Attachment)
 Personal Computers
 SSD
 SAS (Serial Attached SCSI)
 Enterprise-Class Drives
 Servers
Magnetic Storage Devices
 Floppy Disk
 It is a portable storage medium.
 It store small size of data, it physical
size 3.5 inch with 1.44 MB maximum
storage
 Zip Disk
 Similar size to floppy disk but storage
capacity is about 100-1000MB
 Used to store backup of data
Floppy & Zip Drives
Optical Storage Devices
 Optical disk uses laser technology to
read and write data. Laser beam writes
on the surface by crating small pits in
the disk.
 CD-ROM (Compact Disk – Read Only
Memory)
 DVD – ROM (Digital Video Disc – Read Only
Memory)
 CD-R (CD Recordable),
 CD-RW (CD Rewritable)
 Blu-Ray Disk
CD & DVD
BLU-Ray Disk
Other Storage Devices
 Flash Memory
 Solid State Drives
 USB Flash Disk
 Memory Cards
 Magnetic Stripe Cards
 Smart Cards
 Micro Film
SSD (Solid State Drive)
Magnetic Stripe and Smart Cards
Micro Film
