Boards Up Game
1. What is the ratio of the atoms present in H2O?
2. What is the ration of the atoms present in CO 2?
3. How many moles of Sodium atom ( Na atom) are
there in Sodium Chloride ( NaCl)?
4. How many moles of Carbon are there in Carbon
Dioxide?
5. How many moles of Hydrogen are there in
C6H12O6?
What is the mole?

We’re not talking about this

kind of mole!
A. What is the Mole?
 A counting number (like a dozen)
 Avogadro’s number
 1 mol = 6.02  1023 items

A large
amount!!!!
Practice…
 If I have 1 mole of marshmallows, how many do
I have?
6.02 X 1023 Marshmallows
 If I have 2 moles of jelly beans, how many do I
have?
2 moles 6.02 x 1023 jelly beans = 1.2 x 1024
1 mole jelly beans
 If I have 6.02 x 1023 coins, how many do I have?
1 mole of coins
Molar Mass Examples
 Carbon = 12.011 g/mol
 Sulfur = 32.066 g/mol
 Copper = 63.546 g/mol
Molar Mass
 Molar mass is the generic term for the
mass of one mole of any substance
 (expressed in grams/mol)
 The same as:
1) Gram Molecular Mass (for molecules)
2) Gram Formula Mass (ionic compounds)
3) Gram Atomic Mass (for elements)
MOLAR MASS OF COMPOUNDS
The MOLAR MASS of a compound is determined
from the atomic mass (in g) and the number of atoms
of each element as indicated by the chemical formula.
The formula mass is expressed in g/mol.
The table below shows the calculation of the
formula mass of an ionic compound & molecular
compound.
Calculating Molar Mass for Compounds
 Molar mass is determined by the adding
the weights of all the atoms in a compound.
Calculate the formula mass of magnesium
carbonate, MgCO3.

24.305 g + 12.011 g + 3 x (15.999 g) =

Thus, 84.313 grams is the formula mass for
MgCO3 or 84.313 g/mol (molar mass).
Compound Molar Mass Examples
 Water

 H 2O
 2(1.008) + 15.999 = 18.015 g/mol
 Sodium chloride
 NaCl
 22.990 + 35.453 = 58.443 g/mol
Molar Mass Examples
 Sodium bicarbonate
 NaHCO3
 22.990 + 1.008 + 12.011 + 3(15.999)
= 84.006 g/mol
 Sucrose
 C12H22O11
 12(12.011) + 22(1.008) + 11(15.999)
= 342.297 g/mol
1. CH2CO2
2. C2H6O
3. Na2B4O
