Vanessa atalanta , the red admiral or, previously, the red
admirable, is a well-characterized, medium-sized butterfly with black wings, red bands, and white spots. It has a wingspan of about 2 inches. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. The red admiral caterpillar eats plants in the Urticaceae, or nettle family. Adult red admirals usually eat rotting fruit, tree sap, and bird droppings. The red admiral is found in moist woods and forests, yards, parks, meadows, marshes, and fields. The Orange Oakleaf
Kallima inachus, the orange oakleaf, Indian oakleaf
or dead leaf, is a nymphalid butterfly found in Tropical Asia from India to Japan. With wings closed, it closely resembles a dry leaf with dark veins and is a commonly cited example of camouflage. They feed on sap, over-ripe fruit, and nutrients found in puddles (this is called mud-puddling)The orange oakleaf is a powerful flier and usually flies in dense forests with good rainfall, amongst undergrowth and along stream beds. It is attracted to tree sap and over-ripe fruit, and is also known to mud-puddle. The Cabbage White
Pieris rapae is a small- to medium-sized butterfly species of the
whites-and-yellows family Pieridae. It is known in Europe as the small white, in North America as the cabbage white or cabbage butterfly, on several continents as the small cabbage white, and in New Zealand as the white butterfly. The velvety green caterpillars of the Cabbage White Butterfly are considered a pest because they feed on cabbages and other plants found in vegetable gardens, such as cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli, radishes and turnips. It lives in urban areas, forests and woodlands, and heath. The Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui is the most widespread of all butterfly
species. It is commonly called the painted lady, or formerly in North America the cosmopolitan and it is the most common species of butterfly in the world. painted lady can be seen in Durer's Madonna with the Iris, where it symbolises the crucifixion. The white butterflies on the other hand represent purity and hope. Less colourful, even dowdy, butterflies are also used in art to reflect our fears. Adults drink nectar from flowers. Caterpillars eat thistles, stinging nettles and mallows. The painted lady (Vanessa cardui) is the most widespread of all butterflies in the world. It is found throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and Central America. The Common Brimstone
Gonepteryx rhamni is a butterfly of the family Pieridae. It lives throughout
the Palearctic zone and is commonly found across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Across much of its range, it is the only species of its genus, and is therefore simply known locally as the brimstone. Its wing span size is 60 - 74 mm. Adults: feed on nectar. A long proboscis (sucking mouthpart) enables them to take nectar from flowers, such as teasel, that are beyond the reach of many other butterflies. They prefer to drink from purple flowers, and bluebells are an important early nectar source. They can be found in damp woodlands, along sunny, woodland rides and mature hedgerows, and in large gardens. The foodplants of the larvae are buckthorn and alder buckthorn.
