Drive
A drive is a medium that is capable of storing
and reading information that is not easily
removed like a disk.
The picture is an example of different drives
listed in Microsoft Windows My Computer.
Buses
A bus protocol is the set of rules that govern the behavior of various devices
connected to the bus
The bus lines used for transferring data is grouped into 3 types. They are,
Address line
Data line
Control line.
During data transfer operation, one device plays the role of a Master.
Master device initiates the data transfer by issuing read / write command
on the bus. Hence it is also called as Initiator.
The device addressed by the master is called as Slave / Target.
Types of Buses:
PANs (Personal Area Networks) let devices communicate over the range of a person.
A common example is a wireless network that connects a computer with its peripherals.
Best example to design a short-range wireless network called Bluetooth to connect
these components without wires.
LAN (Local Area Network): A LAN is a privately owned network that operates within
and nearby a single building like a home, office or factory.
Best example: wifi
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) covers a city. The best-known examples of
MANs are the cable television networks available in many cities. Best example is the
cable TV network Operators
WAN (Wide Area Network) spans a large geographical area, often a country or
continent. We will begin our discussion with wired WANs, using the example of a
company with branch offices in different cities.
Eg: ISP – internet service provider
Open Systems Interconnection - OSI layer
Totally there are seven layers, they are
1. Physical: The physical layer is responsible for handling the actual physical devices that are
used to make a connection.
2. Data Link: This layer is implemented as a method of establishing and maintaining reliable
links between different nodes or devices on a network using existing physical connections.
3. Network: The network layer is used to route data between different nodes on the network.
4. Transport: The transport layer is responsible for handing the layers above it a reliable
connection.
5. Session: The session layer is a connection handler. It creates, maintains, and destroys
connections between nodes in a persistent way.
6. Presentation: The presentation layer is responsible for mapping resources and creating
context.
7. Application: The application layer is the layer that the users and user-applications most
often interact with.
Protocol: A protocol is a set of rules and standards that basically
define a language that devices can use to communicate.
Types of protocol:
TCP - (Transmission Control Protocol)
UDP - (User Datagram Protocol)
TCP - is a reliable connection-oriented protocol that allows a byte
stream originating on one machine to be delivered without error
on any other machine in the internet.
UDP - is an unreliable, connectionless protocol for applications
that do not want TCP’s sequencing or flow control and wish to
provide their own.
RAID architectures
RAID is a technology that is used to increase the performance and/or
reliability of data storage.
The abbreviation stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks.
A RAID system consists of two or more drives working in parallel.
RAID levels:
RAID 0 – striping
RAID 1 – mirroring
RAID 5 – striping with parity
RAID 6 – striping with double parity
RAID 10 – combining mirroring and striping
RAID architectures
To achieve greater performance and higher availability, servers and larger
systems use RAID
disk technology.
RAID is a family of techniques for using multiple disks as a parallel array of
data storage
devices, with redundancy built in to compensate for disk failure.
RAID is a set of physical disk drives viewed by the operating system as a single
logical drive.
Data are distributed across the physical drives of an array.
Redundant disk capacity is used to store parity information, which guarantees
data
recoverability in case of a disk failure.
The RAID array creates significant performance and reliability gains.
