STRESS AND DISEASE
STRESS

Stress is your body's way of responding to any

kind of demand or threat. When you feel
threatened, your nervous system responds by
releasing a flood of stress hormones, including
adrenaline, Serotonin, Dopamine and cortisol
among others, which arouses the body for
emergency action.
STRESS RELATED DISEASES

• Heart Diseases
• Obesity
• Diabetes
• Headaches and Migraines
• Depression and Anxiety
• GIT problems e.g. Ulcers, GERD, IBS
• Asthmatic attacks
• Accelerated ageing
27
Epidemic:

A disease or condition which is highly prevalent

in a community or large geographical area.
• “Depression has today
become a common
phenomenon and it affects
persons from all walks of
life and ages. I urge
employers and institutions
of learning to invest more
time and resources in
monitoring and facilitating
the mental well-being of
their charges. “
Why discuss stress and disease?
• WHO 2017 report ranked depression as one of
the leading causes of suicide.
• The same report ranked Kenya as the 6th in
Africa in terms of prevalence of depression.
• Suicide is the second leading cause of death
among the youth. However, there is under
reporting of cases due to stigma, which is the
same reason why people are not seeking help
when they are depressed.

There are generally two types of stress?
1. Eustress
2. Distress
Eustress
• Eustress is the “good” kind of stress
• Something pleasing will result at the end of
the stressful situation
• Examples:
– Planning a wedding
– Planning a party
– Completing your last semester before graduating
from high school
Distress
• Distress is a displeasing kind of stress
• It is the “bad” kind of stress
• It causes the most harm to your body
• Examples:
– Death of a pet or a loved one
– You lost your wallet
– Financial problems

Stress Curve
HYPERTENSION

• Excessive pressure of blood against the walls

of arteries
• Ruptured arteries to the heart can result in a
Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
• Ruptured arteries to the brain can cause a
cerebral hemorrhage (Stroke)
Migraine Headaches

• Constriction and dilation of the carotid

arteries on one side of the head.

• Prodrome- “preattack” or constriction

phase of a migraine headache.
Coronary Heart Disease
• Major risk factors associated with CHD:
– High serum cholesterol
– Hypertension
– Smoking
– Obesity
• Stress and a Type A behavior linked to CHD
- Personality traits: Anger / hostile / resentful / bitter
– Occupation: The more stressful the job, the more
prevalent is heart disease
– Time urgent(Day of the week e.g. Monday vs.
Friday
STROKE
• Psychogenic-A physical disease caused by emotional stress
without a microorganism involved.
– The mind changes the body’s physiology so that body part
breaks down.
• Ulcers
• Asthma
• Somatogenic-A disease that results from the mind increasing
the body’s susceptibility to:
– Disease causing organisms (germs)
– Natural degenerative processes
• Cancer
• Arthritis
Stress and Immunology

• Stress can decrease your white blood cell count

which will lead to poor health.
• Immunological system includes the following white
blood cell groups which identify and destroy foreign
substances:
– Phagocytes-destroyers
– Lymphocytes
• T cells
• B cells
Stress and Serum Cholesterol

• Significantly increases during stress.

• Accumulates on the walls of the blood vessels
blocking the flow of oxygenated blood to the
heart and brain.
• Studies show that one’s perception of a stressful
situation can increase serum cholesterol levels.
STRESS MANAGEMENT

STRESS MANAGEMENT
These are techniques intended to equip a
person with effective coping mechanisms for
dealing with psychological stress.
Stress management:
Step 1
1) IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

ANIMAL KINGDOM
Matthew:6.25
• "This is why I tell you: do not be worried about the food and
drink you need in order to stay alive, or about clothes for your
body. After all, isn't life worth more than food? And isn't the
body worth more than clothes?
Matthew:6.26
• Look at the birds: they do not plant seeds, gather a harvest
and put it in barns; yet your Father in heaven takes care of
them! Aren't you worth much more than birds?
PLANT KINGDOM
Matthew:6.28
• "And why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers
grow: they do not work or make clothes for themselves.
Matthew:6.29
• But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth
had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers.
Matthew:6.31
• "So do not start worrying: 'Where will my food come from? or
my drink? or my clothes?'
