Success criteria: Students can convert from denary to binary


number systems
Introducing binary

You should be familiar with the decimal system, which uses ten digits:0,1,2,3,
4,5,6,7,8 and 9.The decimal system is also known as the denary system or base 10.

In base 10,place value increases inmultiples of 10.The units are followed by10s,the 10s are
followed by 100s and the100s are followed by 1000s and so on.
Introducing binary
Binary Base 2

In base 2, place value increases in multiples of 2.

The units are followed by 2s, the 2s are followed by 4s, the 4s are followed by 8s
and the 8s are followed by 16s and so on.

Please note the binary number go from right to left:

4096 2048 1024 512 256 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1


Adding binary numbers

Adding binary numbers is similar to adding denary numbers, in that we carry a


digit when the columns add up to more than one.
