What is a Modifier
A modifier is a word, phrase or clause that describes, defines or give additional
information about something by making its meaning more specific.
Modifiers usually come in the form of an adjective or an adverb.

Voices
The voice in verbs tell whether the subject acts or is acted upon.
• Active Voice- This occurs when the subject performs the action
• The dog bites the boy.
• Western sculpture often imitate African tribal masks.

• Passive Voice- This occurs when the subject is acted upon. The subject becomes the object
in the passive voice.
• The person or thing doing the action usually in a phrase that begins with the word “by.”
• The boy was bitten by the dog
• African tribal masks are often imitated by Western Sculpture.

Dangling Modifier
• A dangling modifier describes or limits a word or words that never actually appears in the
sentence.

• It does not describe the word that it is supposed to describe.

• It usually try to describe a subject that is not present in the sentence.

clause
• You can correct a dangling modifier by reviewing the main or independent clause and include the subject
in the main clause.

• Having arrived late for practice, a written excused was needed.


• Having arrived late for practice, Tom needed a written excuse from the coach.

dependent clause
• You can correct a dangling modifier by inserting the subject of the sentence in the introductory phrase.

Combine the introductory Phrase and
the Independent Clause
• A dangling modifier can e corrected by combining the introductory phrase and the
independent clause in one in order to create a sentence.

• For example, To improve his results, the experiment was done again.

• Jonathan improved his results by doing the experiment again.
