MTM is a procedure that analyzes human motions into basic motions and assigns time standards to each. It breaks down tasks into 8 basic motions: Reach, Grasp, Move, Position, Release, Turn, Apply Pressure, and Disengage. Each motion is defined, such as Reach being hand motion to a destination, Grasp to secure an object, and Release to relinquish control of an object. Apply Pressure involves applying force with little motion against resistance in one of two types: APB or APA.

MTM
Is a procedure which analyses any
human motion into basic motion required to perform it and assigns to each motion a predetermined time standard which is determined by the nature of motion and the conditions under which it is made Steps involved in MTM 1.Reach 1.Turn 2.Grasp 2.Apply Pressure 3.Move • APB 4.Position • APA 5.Release 3.Disengage 1.REACH
Is the basic hand motion employed when
the predominant purpose is to move hand and finger to a destination
Reach is performed only by the finger and
arm. Hand varying an object can still perform reach short reaches are performed only by moving finger, larger reaches by hand, forearm and upper arm 1.GRASP Is the basic finger and hand element employed to secure control of an object
Hand and finger must obtain sufficient
control of the object to be able to perform the next basic motion Object may be single object or group of stacked or piled object 1.MOVE Is the basic hand or finger motion employed when the predominant purpose is to transport an object to a destination
Move by finger or hand
Hand must exert control over the object during motion Object may be carried / pushed / slide Use of the hand as a tool is classified as 1.POSITION Is the basic finger or hand element employed to align, orient, engage one object with another to attain a specific relationship
Alignment: Make coincident intersection axis
Orientation: geometrical match
Engage: insertion
Class of fit: Loose, close, tight
Care of symmetry: S, SS, NS Ease of handle: E (ease), D (difficult), P2SE, P1NSD, P3SSD, P2SSE 1.RELEASE
Is the basic finger or hand motion
employed to relinquish control of an object
Release of performed only by the finger
or hand Normal release (RL1) Contact release (RL2) 1.TURN Is the basic motion employed to rotate the hand about the long axis of the forearm
The hand may be empty or holding an object
Turn cannot be made while holding the wrist firm. Turn involves the two bones in the forearm and a pivoting motion at elbow 1.APPLY PRESSURE Apply pressure is an application of muscular force to overcome object resistance, accompanied by little or no motion
Apply pressure is a hesitation or lack of
motion The force is required for apply pressure is greater than that required for a normal more or turn against resistance Apply pressure pressure frequently is indicated by a setting of the muscles Apply pressure may be performed by any Types of Apply Pressure
APB: case exists when the body member
acting requires initial orientation or adjustment to avoid loss of grip, injury or discomfort during force application on the object
APA: case exists when the body member
acting is already fully oriented or adjusted such that full force application to the object can be made immediately 1.DISENGAGE
Is the basic hand or finger element
employed to separate an object from another object where there is a sudden ending of resistance
Friction or recoil must be present,
merely lifting is not disengage Noticeable break of movement must be there
