Interlocking

The purpose of the interlocking function is:

 To avoid dangerous or damaging switchgear operations and
to assure personnel safety

Distinction is made between:

 Bay interlocking (bay-internal switch positions)
 Station interlocking (bay-external switch positions):
– via hardwired station interlocking bus (Solution 1)
– via communication bus LON/IEC61850 (Solution 2)

Interocking
- Solution 1: The hardwired station interlocking bus provides the
highest availability because of the independent position gathering
directly from the primary apparatus.
Each control device within the station can be switched off without an
impact on the other bays (maintenance).
No changes must be done in other control devices when the substation
is extended (integration of new bays).

- Solution 2: The advantage of using the communication bus for station

interlocking is: Minimizing of
cabling between IEDs. Distributed
functionality, not depending on a central function. A drawback
is the low availability: Depending on the
reservation method several switch devices or even the entire
substation are blocked if an IED is switched off or disturbed. If a new
member (IED) is integrated in the communication bus all other control
devices have to be modified (application SW, SCD file).

Interlocking
Basic principles
The interlocking modules are based
on these principles:

 Disconnectors shall not be

opened or closed on-load
 Earthing switches shall not be
closed onto voltage
 CB:s shall not be closed when
surrounding disconnectors are in
intermediate positions
 CB opening is only interlocked at
