FUNCTIONS
 A function f from a set D to a set Y is a rule that assigns a unique
(single) element to each element .
FUNCTIONS
 Domain and Range – The domain of a function is simply defined
as the input values of a function and range is defined as the
output value of a function.
 Domain – is the set of first coordinates (x values)
 Range – is the set of second coordinates (y Values)
FUNCTIONS
1. Given the ordered pairs:
a. f = {(1,2), (2, 2), (3,5), (4, 5)}
 Domain {1, 2, 3, 4}
 Range {2, 5}
b. f = {(1, -1), (2, -3), (0,5), (-1, 3), (4, -5), (-1, 5), (4, -4)}
 Domain {-1, 0, 1, 2, 4}
 Range {-5, -4, -3, -1, 3, 5}
FUNCTIONS
2. Given the mapping diagram
 Domain {a, b, c , d}
 Range {x, y, z}
FUNCTIONS
3. Given the table of values
 Domain {-7, -4, -2, 8, 10, 19} Domain { -19, -6, 1, 2, 15, 18}
 Range {-11, -5, 6, 9, 12, 17} Range { -20, -3, 4, 8, 9, 16)
FUNCTIONS
4. Domain and Range of a function given a graph
 Domain
Interval notation: [-10, -2]
Set notation: {x| - 10 ≤ x≤ - 2 }
 Range
Interval Notation: [3, 18]
Set Notation: {y| 3 ≤ y≤ 18 }
FUNCTIONS
4. Using the Graph
 Domain
Interval notation: (0, 4]
Set notation: {x| 0 < x≤ 4 }
 Range
Interval Notation: [-4, 1)
Set Notation: {y| -4 ≤ y≤ 1 }
FUNCTIONS
4. Using the Graph
 Domain
Interval notation: (- ,
Set notation: {x| x ℝ }
 Range
Interval Notation: (- ,
Set Notation: {y| y ℝ }
FUNCTIONS
4. Using the Graph
 Domain
Interval notation: (- ,
Set notation: {x| x }
 Range
Interval Notation: (- ,
Set Notation: {y| y }
FUNCTIONS
 To determine the domain and range of a function, you can
expressed it using interval or set notation.

FUNCTIONS
Function Notation
 We can also say that “y is a function of x”
y = f(x)
 The notation f(x) does not mean of f multiplied by x
 In other words f(x) denotes the y-value (range) that the function
f pairs with x value (domain). Thus, Thus, f(1) denotes the value
of y at x = 1.
FUNCTIONS
Function Notation
 Express each statement using function notation.
1. How many liters of water are wasted when the faucet runs 5
minutes? Find f(5)
2. Find the value of y corresponds to the value of x = 12. Find f(12)
3. y is 300 when x is 20. f(20) = 300
FUNCTIONS
Function Notation
FUNCTIONS
Domain and Range of a function given the equation
 There is no value of x that makes the function f undefined,
Therefore, the domain has no restrictions. It is the set of all real
numbers and the range is the set of all real numbers

f (x) = -2x + 4
Domain: {x|x ℝ }
Range: {y|y ℝ }
FUNCTIONS
Domain and Range of a function given the equation
 For every values of x, makes the function f defined, therefore the
domain is the set of all real numbers and the range is the set of
all positive numbers greater than 2.
f(x) =
Domain: {x|x ℝ }
Range: {y|y 2 }
FUNCTIONS
Domain and Range of a function given the equation
 For a function involving square root to be defined, the radical
should be greater than or equal to 0. The domain is the set of all
positive numbers including 0. Since the square root of a number
is at least 0, then the range is greater than or equal to zero.
f(x) = x 0
Domain: {x|x 0}
Range: {y|y 0}
FUNCTIONS
Domain and Range of a function given the equation

The radicand should be greater than or equal to 0.

 Examples:
A. f(x) =
x+50
x -5

Domain: {x|x -5}

Range: {y|y 0}
FUNCTIONS
Domain and Range of a function given the equation

The radicand should be greater than or equal to 0.

 Examples:
B. f(x) =
2x - 7 0
2x
x /2
Domain: {x|x }
Range: {y|y 0}
FUNCTIONS
Domain and Range of a function given the equation

If it is a quadratic function, and the leading term is positive, the

range is greater than or equal to..
 Examples:
C. f(x) =
Domain: {x| x ℝ }
Range: {y|y }
FUNCTIONS
Domain and Range of a function given the equation

If it is a quadratic function, and the leading term is negative, the

range is less than or equal to..
 Examples:
