Chapter 14
Submerged Arc Welding(SAW)
CSWIP 3.1
CHAPTER 14
Submerged Arc Welding(SAW)
-Continuous welding process
- Highest heat input due to complete solid shielding by flux
- So highest weld metal deposition rate
- So highest current carrying capacity
- No spatter, UV light exposure
- Flux is provided from flux hopper
- Only suitable for PA & PB position
- Two types of flux- Agglomerated & Fused
CSWIP 3.1
CHAPTER 14
Submerged Arc Welding(SAW)
Agglomerated Flux Fused Flux
-More hygroscopic -less hygroscopic
-need baking & drying -needs only drying
-Can add alloying elements -cannot add alloying elements
-Basic type -acidic type
-used when weld requires -crystalline appearance
impact testing
-Powder appearance
CSWIP 3.1
CHAPTER 14
Submerged Arc Welding(SAW)
-process most prone to solidification cracking due to high dilution
rate (weld deep and narrow)
- SAW can use multi electrode system
- In multielectrode system, the arc can deviate from its fixed path,
called arc blow (due to like polarity)
- To avoid arc blow, the lead arc is DC+ve and trailing arc AC
