Components of

Data
Communication

Mr. Seaton
What is Data Communication?

 The transmission of data between two or more computers. Many computer users need to connect their
computer to other computers, whether located close or by a remote site.
Components of Data Communication

Components of Data communication:

 Sender
 Message
 Communication/Transmission Medium
 Receiver
 Internet Protocol
Components of Data Communication

 Sender – This is the device that sends the message; it can be a computer,
workstation, smartphone, etc.

 Message- This is the information that is sent. Popular forms of information

includes; images, text, audio, video, etc.

 Receiver- This is the device that receives the incoming message.

Communication/Transmission Medium- This is the physical pathway that the message
travels from the sender to the receiver. Examples of communication medium include
Twisted pair cable, Bluetooth, Radio waves (WIFI), etc.

Protocol- This is a set of rules that governs how the data/ message is sent.

Communication Methods
Communication Methods

There are three data communication Methods:

 Simplex
 Half Duplex
 Full Duplex
Communication Methods

 Simplex
In simplex mode the communication is one directional; only one
device on the link can transmit data, the other device just receives
data. Example a PA system (used to provide information but you are
not able to provide a response).
Communication Methods

 Half Duplex
In this communication mode each device on the link can transmit and receive
data, but not at the same time. An example of this is a Walkie-Talkie where
both persons can talk but not at the same time.
Communication Methods

 Full Duplex
In full duplex mode both devices transmit and receives data simultaneously.
One example of a full duplex mode is a telephone network where both persons
are able to talk and listen at the same time.
Communication Methods
Signals

There are two types of signals used to

transmit data:
 Analog Signal
 Digital Signal
What is Bandwidth?

 The amount of data that can be sent over a connection in a fixed

time is called bandwidth. The higher the bandwidth, the more
data can be transmitted. Some applications need a higher
bandwidth in order to run because of the size of the application.
What is a Computer Network?

 A network consists of two or more computers that are linked in

order to share resources, exchange files or allow electronic
communication.
 The computers on a network may be linked through cables,
telephone lines, radio waves, satellites or infrared light beams.
Types of Computer Network

Depending on the geographical area covered by a network, it is classified as:

 Local Area Network (LAN)
 Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
 Wide Area Network (WAN)
 Personal Area Network (PAN)

Personal Area Computer

 A PAN is a network that is used for communicating among computers and

computer devices in close proximity of around a few meters within a room.
 It can be used for communicating between the devices themselves or for
connecting to a larger network such as the internet.
 PANs can be wired or wireless.
Local Area Network

 A LAN is a network that is used for communicating among computer

devices, usually within an office building or home.
 LAN enables the sharing of resources such as files or hardware devices that
may be needed by multiple users.
 Is limited in size typically spanning a few hundred meters and no more than
a mile.
 Is fast, with speeds from 10Mbps to 10Gbps
Local Area Network (LAN)
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

 A metropolitan Area Network is a large computer network that usually spans

a city or a large campus.
 The MAN is optimized for a larger geographical area than a LAN ranging
from several blocks of buildings to entire cities.
 A MAN might be owned and operated by a single organization but it usually
will be used by many individuals and organizations.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)

 WAN covers a large geographical area such as a country, continent or even

the whole world.
 To cover great distances WAN may transmit data over leased high-speed
phone lines or wireless links such as satellites.
 The most Popular wide area network is the internet.
