Definition: "Coded programs /set of instruction that control
how the computer hardware works“

Software is written in high level programming language.

For a computer system to be useful it has to consist of both


hardware and software.

There are 2 types of software - System Software and Application
Software

System software: programs that allow the hardware to run


properly and allow the user to communicate with the computer

System software often manages the computer's resources.

System software may be classified as operating system, device


drivers and utility software.

An operating system, therefore, provides a platform for application
programs to run. As a user, one of the ways you can interact with the
operating system is through a graphical user interface(GUI),such as
Windows.

Device driver software program which allow hardware components to
work.

Compiler: a computer program that converts source code


into a language that can be understood by a computer – machine
code /object code

Linker: a computer program that takes files generated by a compiler


and then combines them into a single file that can be executed.

Utility software, which is programs that help make your computer work more
efficiently.
Application Software
Application software are designed to allow users to complete specific
tasks.
This may be to:
• Write a letter/Present information
• Browse the internet
• Manipulate data in a spreadsheet or database
• Manipulate graphics, sound or video.
