Janus, known for new beginnings and transitions. January marks
the start of the calendar year in many cultures.

word "februarius," meaning purification. It is also the shortest
month, with 28 days in common years and 29 days in leap years.

 March: The third month of the year, named after Mars, the Roman
god of war. It is associated with growth, renewal, and the
equinox, when day and night are of equal length.
• April: The fourth month of the year, its name possibly derived
from the Latin word "aperire," meaning to open, referring to
the opening of buds and flowers in spring.

• May: The fifth month of the year, named after Maia, the Roman
goddess of fertility and spring. It is also known for May Day
celebrations, Labor Day (in many countries), and Mother's Day.

Caesar, the first Roman emperor. August is associated with
the peak of summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in
the southern hemisphere.

• September: The ninth month of the year, its name derived

from the Latin word "septem," meaning seven, as it was
originally the seventh month in the Roman calendar.
September marks the transition from summer to autumn (fall)
in the northern hemisphere and from winter to spring in the
southern hemisphere.
 October: The tenth month of the year, its name also derived from the
Latin word "octo," meaning eight, as it was originally the eighth
month in the Roman calendar.

 November: The eleventh month of the year, named from the Latin word
"novem," meaning nine, as it was originally the ninth month in the
Roman calendar. November marks the transition from autumn to winter
in the northern hemisphere and from spring to summer in the southern
hemisphere.
 December: The twelfth and final month of the year, its name derived
from the Latin word "decem," meaning ten, as it was originally the
tenth month in the Roman calendar. December marks the beginning of

DAYS OF THE WEEK.
PREPOSITIONS OF TIME.
 One of the most significant units we divide our time
into is the day, and we refer to our days by name
constantly. Without using them, we cannot locate
ourselves or our plans in time, and neither can we
share plans efficiently with others.

 I will demonstrate how to spell, pronounce, and use

the days of the week, understand them in practice,
and recognize common but confusing phrases in
English associated with time vocabulary.
Why are these names attributed to the days of the
week!

1. Monday: The first day of the week in many cultures,

named after the Moon.

2. Tuesday: The second day of the week, named after the

Norse god Tyr or Tiw, associated with war and law.

3. Wednesday: The third day of the week, named after the

Norse god Odin or Woden, associated with wisdom and poetry.

4. Thursday: The fourth day of the week, named after the

Norse god Thor, associated with thunder and strength.
Why are these names attributed to the days of the
week!

5. Friday: The fifth day of the week, named after the

Norse goddess Frigg or Freyja, associated with love
and fertility.

6. Saturday: The sixth day of the week, named after

the Roman god Saturn, associated with agriculture and
wealth.

7. Sunday: The seventh and final day of the week in

many cultures, named after the Sun.
Why is it useful to know the seven days of the week
in English?
The names of the days carry the most important information.
Consider the following tasks, which need the days of the
week for reference:
 Inviting someone to a party.
 Booking a holiday.
 Explaining what we intend to do in the future.
 Planning an event.
Defending ourselves against an accusation made in the past.

You need to use and understand the days of the week, so we

can organize the future, recall the past, conduct business,
meet people, and make use of our work and leisure time.
How do you pronounce and spell the days of the week
in English?

The pronunciations and spellings of English weekday

names can seem confusing. This is because they
originated from other languages, and are not
pronounced as they are spelled.
