INTRODUCTION

 Both soil and water are essential for plant growth.

 The soil provides a structural base to the plants and allows the root system to spread and get the
strong hold.
 The pores of the soil within the root zone hold moisture hold which clings to the soil particles
by surface tension in the driest state or may fill up the pores partially or fully saturating it with
the useful nutrients dissolved in water , essential for the growth of the plant.
IMPORTANCE OF SOIL WATER RELATIONSHIP

 Water is a vital resource for plant growth and development.

 Soil acts as a reservoir and medium for water storage and movement.

 Understanding soil-water relationships helps optimize irrigation practices, prevent

waterlogging, and enhance crop productivity.

KEY CONCEPTS OF SOIL WATER RELATION
Concept 1: Soil Moisture Content
 It refers to the amount of water present in the soil.
 Expressed as a percentage of the soil's weight or volume.
 Influences plant water uptake and soil fertility.
Concept 2: Field Capacity
 The maximum amount of water the soil can hold against gravity.
 Represents the soil's ability to retain water after excess drainage.
 Provides plants with available water for growth.
Concept 3: Wilting Point
 The moisture level at which plants can no longer extract water from the soil.
 Indicates the soil's ability to retain water against plant extraction.
 Plants start to wilt and show signs of water stress.
FACTORS AFFECTING SOIL-WATER RELATIONSHIP
Factor 1: Soil Texture
 Influences the water-holding capacity and drainage characteristics.
 Sandy soils have low water-holding capacity and rapid drainage.
 Clay soils have high water-holding capacity and slow draina
Factor 2: Soil Structure
 Describes the arrangement of soil particles and pore spaces.
 Well-structured soils have better water infiltration and drainage.
 Poorly structured soils can have compaction and reduced water movement.
Factor 3: Organic Matter Content
 Increases soil water-holding capacity and improves soil structure.
 Organic matter acts as a sponge, retaining moisture for plant use.
 Enhances soil fertility and nutrient availability.
SOIL WATER AVAILABILITY FOR PLANTS

 Plant roots extract water from the soil through their root systems.

 Water moves from regions of high soil moisture to lower moisture areas.

 Soil moisture availability is crucial for plant growth and development.

ROOT ZONE SOIL WATER
 Root zone soil water refers to the water content and availability
within the soil layer where plant roots extract water.
 It plays a crucial role in plant growth, development, and overall
productivity. Understanding and effectively managing root zone
soil water is essential for sustainable agriculture and efficient
water use
 The root zone is the area in the soil where plant roots are
concentrated and actively absorb water and nutrients.
 The availability of water within this zone is crucial for plant
health and optimal growth. Insufficient water in the root zone
can lead to drought stress, reduced nutrient uptake, and
decreased crop yield.
IMPORTANCE OF ROOT ZONE SOIL WATER
 Discuss the significance of root zone soil water for plant growth and development.
 Explain how water availability in the root zone affects plant health, yield, and overall
productivity.
 Highlight the role of root zone soil water in nutrient uptake and transport within the plant.
 Root-zone soil moisture plays a significant role in crop growth, since soil acts as a reservoir to
store moisture for plants' needs. Growers are well aware that plants show immediate symptoms
if water is limited for root uptake.
FREQUENCY OF IRRIGATION
 The frequency of irrigation plays a vital role in the successful growth and development of
plants. It refers to the interval at which water is applied to crops or plants. Proper irrigation
frequency is essential for ensuring that plants receive an adequate and consistent water supply,
which is crucial for their health, productivity, and overall agricultural sustainability.
 Water is a fundamental requirement for plant growth, and maintaining the right balance of soil
moisture is essential. Irrigation frequency directly influences the availability of water to plant
roots, affecting their ability to absorb nutrients and carry out essential physiological processes.
Insufficient or excessive irrigation can lead to water stress, nutrient deficiencies, reduced crop
yields, and even plant diseases.
FACTOR AFFECTING FREQUENCY OF IRRIGATION

 Climate & Season

 Soil characteristics
 Crop characteristics
 Crop & Water management
IMPORTANCE OF FREQUENCY IRRIGATION

 The frequency of irrigation of crops is higher in summers as water evaporates through the
transpiration process as well as through soil pores so evaporation is at a faster rate hence it is
required to overcome the loss of water.
 Irrigation frequency is one of the important factors in irrigation management, especially for
porous soils . Studies have shown that increasing the frequency of irrigation can help plant roots
better absorb water in the soil, which is beneficial for increasing the yield of crops and the
CWUE .
CONCLUSION
 Soil-water relationships play a vital role in agriculture.

 Understanding soil moisture, field capacity, and wilting point is crucial.

 Factors like soil texture, structure, and organic matter influence soil-water relationships.

 Soil-water movement processes involve infiltration, percolation, and capillary rise.

 Effective soil-water management strategies optimize water use and enhance crop productivity.
