Introduction
The study of cities is marked by a paradox:
1. Much of the urban growth is taking place in the Third World
2. But, urban theory is driven by the First World.
The First World – ‘models’ and the Third World is considered the
‘problem’?
• The problem : Planning practices are borrowed – do not fit our Ananya Roy
context.
• How “planning” produces the “unplannable” - placing informality
outside the formal order of urbanization.
