Forces and Electricity Revision

The document discusses forces, mass, gravity, gravitational field strength, weight, and the difference between mass and weight. It provides definitions and formulas for calculating weight based on mass and location. An example problem is included to demonstrate how weight changes with location even though mass remains the same.

Revision : Forces and

Electricity
• What is a Force?
A Force is a Push or Pull
• What is the Unit of Force?
Newton => N
Mass
• Mass is the amount of substances or matter in an object
• It is measures in Kilogram (kg)
• 1 kg = 1000 gram
• 700 gram = 700 / 1000 = 0.7 kg
• 350 gram = 350/1000 = 0.35 kg
• 500 gram = 500/1000= 0.5 kg
• Mass remains constant or fixed everywhere
Gravity
• What is Gravity?
Gravity is an attractive force that exists between all objects that have
mass. Gravity causes objects with mass to be attracted to each other.
Gravity is the force with which every object is pulled towards the earth
What is Gravitational Field Strength?

• On the Earth's surface, the gravitational field strength is about 10

N/kg. This means for every kilogram of mass, there is a 10 Newton
force of gravity acting on it.
• On the moon, the gravitational field strength is only about 2 N/kg. The
moon's weaker gravity results in a lower field strength.
What is Weight?

• Weight is a measure of the total force with which the earth is pulling
any object.
• How to Calculate Weight ?
• On Earth 1 Kg of Object is pulled with 10 newton force i.e. 1 kg object has a
weight of 10 N
• Hence if the mass of the object is 50 kg : Weight = 50 x 10 = 500 N On Earth
• Mass= 50 kg , Weight (Moon)= 50 x 1.6 = 80 N
• Moon is pulling the object with less force because the moon has lowere
gravitational field strength.
• Weight = Mass (In KG) multiplied with gravitational field strength
• On earth Weight = mass x 10
What is the difference between Mass and Weight?

1. The main difference between mass and weight is that mass is constant
while weight can vary based on gravity.
2. An object's mass measures how much matter it contains. Weight is total
force with which earth is pulling an object or body.
3. Mass stays the same regardless of location. Weight depends on gravity and
can change based on location.
4. An object has the same mass on Earth and the moon, but less weight on
the moon due to lower gravity.
5. Mass is measured in Kg but weight is measure in Newton;
6. Mass has no direction but weight always acts towards the earth i.e.
downward
Problem:
1. Peter has a bag that weighs 800 N on earth. He travels to Planet Y where the
gravitational field strength is only half as strong as it is on earth.

• Calculate the followings:

• Mass of the bag on Earth [2]

• Mass of the bag on Planet Y [1]

• Weight of the bag on Planet Y [2]
