Networks
introduction
• A computer network is a
telecommunications network that allows
computers to exchange data.
• The physical connection between
networked computing devices is
established using either cable media or
wireless media.
• The best known computer network is the
internet.
A computer network is a set
of computers sharing resources located on or
provided by network nodes. The computers use
common communication
protocols over digital interconnections to
communicate with each other. These
interconnections are made up
of telecommunication network technologies, based
on physically wired, optical, and wireless radio-
frequency methods that may be arranged in a
variety of network topologies.
Types of network
A computer network is mainly of four
types:

LAN(Local Area Network)

PAN(Personal Area Network)
MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
WAN(Wide Area Network)
PERSONAL AREA NETWORK
(PANs)
 It is an interconnection of
personal technology devices to
communicate over a short distance,
which is less than 33 feet or 10
meters or within the range of an
individual person, typically using
some form of wireless
technologies.
 The reach of a pan typically
extends to 10 meters.
LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LANs)
A local area network (LAN) is a
collection of devices connected together in
one physical location, such as a building,
office, or home.
 A LAN can be small or large, ranging from
a home network with one user to an
enterprise network with thousands of users
and devices in an office or school.
 Wired LANs are most likely based on
Ethernet technology.
WIDE AREA NETWORK (WANs)
 In its simplest form,
a wide-area
network (WAN) is a
collection of local-area
networks (LANs) or
other networks that
communicate with one
another.
 A WAN is essentially a
network of networks,
with the Internet the
world's largest WAN.
METROPOLITAN AREA
NETWORK(MANs)
A metropolitan area
network (MAN) is a
computer network that
interconnects users with
computer resources in a
geographic region of the
size of a metropolitan area.
