Himachal Pradesh is a northern Indian state in the Himalayas. It is bordered by


Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab and Chandigarh on the west, Haryana on
the south-west, Uttarakhand on the south-east and by the Tibet Autonomous Region
on the east.
POPULATION

Himachal Pradesh has a total population of 6,864,602.

In this population, 3,481,873 are males and 3,382,729 are females as per the final results of
the Census of India 2011.

In the census, the state is placed 21st on the population chart, followed by Tripura at 22nd
place.

 Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh was top ranked with a population strength of
1,507,223.
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

There is a huge variation in the climatic conditions of Himachal Pradesh due to variation in
altitude.

 The climate varies from hot and sub-humid tropical in the southern low tracts, warm and
temperate, cool and temperate and cold glacial and alpine in the northern and eastern high
elevated mountain ranges.

By October, nights and mornings are very cold.


The spring season starts from mid February to mid April.
The rainy season start at the end of the month of June.
DIALECT / LANGUAGE
While Hindi is the official language of Himachal Pradesh, the Pahari
language is used in everyday conversation.

English is given the status of an additional official language.

The use of language in Himachal Pradesh also depends on the various


communities that have settled in the hilly terrain.

The use of Punjabi language is popular.

The languages Dogri, Kangri and Kinnauri are prevalently used by the
local people of the state.
CLOTHING
Himachal Pradesh, one of the untouched, pristine, and one of the
most popular states in India has a diverse clothing styles.
Dhoti, kurta, coat, waistcoat, turban and hand towel forms the
traditional wardrobe of Brahmins.
Rajputs men carry valor with them and their clothes reflect that
fighter in them. They wear churidar pyjamas, starched turban
and a fitting long coat.
Costumes of Rajput or Brahmin women are very traditional.
They usually wear kurtas, rahide and Ghagra Lehenga Choli.
Special types of ornaments are designed beautifully by rings
and bangles. They are commonly worn by the Chamba females.
STAPLE FOOD
Local food of Himachal Pradesh is delicious and lip smacking.

Wheat, barley, maize, buckwheat, rice and millet are the major
cereals that are cultivated in Himachal Pradesh. Traditional foods
prepared from major cereals are common in almost all the parts of
Himachal Pradesh.

The local people prefer to have dal, vegetable curry and plain rice in
their daily routine.

Besides apples, other fruits that too are produced in Himachal


Pradesh are pear, peach, plum, apricot nut fruit, citrus fruits, mango,
litchi, guava and strawberry.
IMPORTANT PERSONALITIES
Hailing from a small village called Ghuggar in the Palampur region of
Himachal, he is the brave army officer of our country who showed his
valour in the Kargil war, 1999. He was awarded the highest bravery
award of the nation, the Param Veer Chakra posthumously.

 The dimpled beauty with a number of amazing movies to her name too
has her roots in the pahari terrain. Priety Zinta has done her schooling
from the very celebrated The Convent of Jesus and Mary school and an
another very famous all girls college in Shimla, St. Bedes.
Dilip Singh Rana, better known as The Great Khali is an
internationally famed wrestler who needs no introduction. This 7 ft.
3″ tall wrestler is famous for his unique fighting skills.

 The soulful singer from tinsel town, Mohit Chauhan comes from the small
town of Nahan in Sirmaur district. Formerly famed as a pop singer, he has
won many awards as a playback singer and is loved for his melodious
voice.

 Ruskin Bond, the Padma Shree and Sahitya Academy award winner
author, is a well known name with children and adults alike. He has
stretched out some fantastic characters and stories which have a plot
rooted in the pahari region of Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand.
The beautiful Kangna Ranaut has established her name in the Indian film
industry through hard work, brilliant acting skills and her bold and
upfront persona. The winner of many awards, she hails from a place
called Bhambha in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh.

 The Noble Prize winner for peace, Tenzin Gyatso is the highest monk of
his community and well known worldwide for his advocacy of the
Tibetan Buddhism, his spirituality and his sincere interest in the modern
science.

 Born in Nehari town of Himachal Pradesh, Charanjit Singh holds pride of


serving as the captain of the Indian Hockey team that won the gold medal in
the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Rohtang Pass, is a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir
Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km from
Manali.

Solang Valley is a side valley at the top of the Kullu


Valley in Himachal Pradesh.

Hidimbi Devi Temple, also known variously as the


Hadimba Temple, is located in Manāli, a hill station in
the State of Himāchal Pradesh in north India.

The Spiti Valley is a cold desert mountain valley located


high in the Himalaya mountains. The name "Spiti" means
"The Middle Land", i.e. the land between Tibet and India.
CULTURE
Himachal is well known for its handicrafts. The carpets, leather
works, shawls, paintings, woodwork and paintings are worth
appreciating.

Local music and dance reflects the cultural identity of the state.
Through their dance and music, they entreat their gods during local
festivals and other special occasions.

Apart from the fairs and festivals that are celebrated all over India,
there are number of other fairs and festivals, including the temple
fairs in nearly every region that are of great significance to Himachal
Pradesh.
FESTIVALS
Halda festival – Welcome the New Year: Halda festival
is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm in order to
celebrate the new year.

The most awaited festival of Himachal Pradesh, Sazo is


celebrated to bid adieu to the village deities.

Lohri is a feisty festival celebrated by the people of


Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.
To promote the culture of Himachal Pradesh, a winter carnival is
organized every year in Manali. Himachal Pradesh started the trend
of Winter Carnival back in 1977 and now after almost three
decades the festival has become bigger and better!

The traditional Kullu Dussehra is organized in the month of


October and gets off a spectacular start with the traditional
procession of Lord Raghunathji.

Ice Skating Carnival is one of the most enjoyed festivals too. To


one's astonishment, Shimla is home to the biggest natural ice
skating rink in Asia. That is why it is just the right place to host Ice
Skating Carnival.
