• Definition
• Cardinal vowels are not the vowels of any
particular language
• They are a standard reference system and are
the rage of vowels that the human vocal
apparatus can make

•Oral sound (the air flows out of the oral cavity)
•Voiced (the vocal cords vibrate in the vowel
production
•Syllabic (forming syllables)
•Determined by the shape and size of the oral
cavity, especially the tongue height and tongue
part
